HEALTHY GRECO KEY TO SUCCESSFUL ATTACK
By Rick Bailey
In their only meeting, Kentucky trounced Eastern Kentucky 52-7 early in the 1998 season.
The Colonels avoided a shutout in the third quarter on a 9-yard pass to Tony DeGregorio from Jon Denton. Eastern was 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) on third-down conversions, and the Colonels struggled for 184 yards of total offense.
Such numbers must increase dramatically if the Colonels are to compete with the Wildcats when the teams open the 2007 season at 6:08 p.m. Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.
Kentucky opponents traditionally have gained yardage almost at will. A year ago, when the Wildcats went 8-5 including a bowl victory, the defense surrendered an average of 453.4 yards a game and 500 or more yards six times.
Eastern will attack a UK defense with a mixture of passing from senior quarterback Josh Greco, running from Mark Dunn and Bobby Washington, and receiving from a corps of veterans and youngsters, all operating behind an offensive line of four returning starters.
Greco put up impressive numbers and was Offensive Player of the Year in the Ohio Valley Conference as a sophomore. He passed for 2,861 yards -- 260 yards a game -- and 25 touchdowns.
