"It wasn't like they (Georgia) were some big, powerful team," Spurrier said on his television show Sunday. "They've actually lost five in a row to Eastern Division opponents. Kentucky and Vandy beat 'em last year." link (http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/09/09/gafoot_0910.html)

Now go beat the ever-loving cow-poo out of USC when we play them!

I agree with the UGa not being powerful. They were way over-rated.

Apparently they are overated since they let a team like South Carolina beat them.

I hope we crush them this year. That game is slowly becoming one of the most important games to me as a fan.

What did he say that isn't true?

He is inconspicuously condescending toward other teams in the SEC. Though he presented some facts about their record, everything else he mentioned was his personal opinion. He sends his subtle jabs out to lesser foes because it makes him feel special.

Spurrier's comment about UK and Clemson was brought up on Brooks' first radio show this season and Brooks said SOS's barbs were directed at Clemson (a bitter rival of SC), not at UK. I think the same is true here. Spurrier was twisting the knife he deftly placed in the pride of the Georgia faithful, and using losses to Vandy and UK (two teams UGA expects to dominate) as the foil.

Also, Brooks said Spurrier was passed over as a candidate for a coaching position at UK around 1980, and is still bitter over that. I also had heard that Spurrier's big motivation for piling on UK when Curry was here was because Curry didn't retain Spurrier as the QB coach/Offensive Coordinator at Georgia Tech when Curry was hired to be the Coach at GT.

Georgia, Clemson, and S. Carolina are battling over the best high school players in South Carolina, and I think these barbs directed at Clemson and UGA are meant to influence them as well.

Visor boy may hold immature grudges, but he is one hell of a coach, and delights in needling his adversaries.

He does it because he is a competitor, and he likes to make opposing teams and coaches mad. Most of the time he makes a pretty good point in the process.

There is no correlation, IMO, with condescending behavior and being a competitor. I am as competitive as they come with regards to work, friends, pick up basketball games on the weekend, and many other things. I do not, however, look to make subtle comments that would be misconstrued as insults. At times Spurrier does make points that I agree with, but there is something to be said for winning and losing with dignity; it is something that he lacks.

And, you have to deal with that smirk look he has. That makes his comments feel more condesending.

Check the roster, Kentucky has siphoned off a few of that South Carolina talent since Brooks took over.

Spurrier has earned the right to do whatever he wants in the SEC (within reason, of course). I see nothing wrong with his comments. I actually like him and I think he's pretty funny.

Brooks has played it right and kept quiet. When we win, I'm sure the barb will be sent right back!! The OLD Visor boy has never changed and never will.

Admittedly, I support Spurrier more than most folks around here, but:

His point was to deflate USC fans' and players' big heads coming off the UGA victory. USC fans are not used to success, and beating their second main rival (behind Clemson), has given USC fans a lot to brag about. As the coach of the team, overconfidence from the players is dangerous, and he is trying to take down HIS OWN team by pointing out that Georgia has lost a lot recently, particularly to teams that regularly fill up the bottom three slots of the SEC East, USC included. Thus, beating UGA doesn't mean USC has "arrived" at anything.

I love UK, but UK fans need to remember that Spurrier does not lose sleep trying to put down the UK program. His comments from earlier in the year were a slam on Clemson, and these comments were a deflation of his own team's accomplishment (with the fringe benefit of making UGA mad). Nobody in the state of South Carolina or Georgia (the two concerned parties here) considered what Spurrier's comments meant to UK or Vandy.

Unfortunatley you nor I will ever know his true intentions, but someone who articulates their thoughts in a well-thought manner would not be saying these things. If he did spend some time thinking about his quotes, he would realize that they insults to multiple teams.

I agree that playing the "what did Spurrier mean by that" game is futile. I was just going on what I think the average person in SC seeing the quote would think. Of course, it's natural that UK fans fix on a different meaning and "intent" behind the comments.

Personally, I've always thought his main point was to draw as much outside attention to himself so as to keep it off his players. When his teams win, he looks like a genius. When they lose, he looks like an arse, but he is the umbrella for his team.

I think we should take this subject back up the first week in Oct as there is way more important stuff at hand. Gets us off focus.

This is often stated eloquently by other various users, so I will try to do this sentiment justice. Just so long as the players are focused on this week, we fans can have fun with future games.

Good comparison. Spurrier would do well to learn from Bobby Knight and aging. Spurrier isn't as young as he used to be. Or as successful. Like Knight. I also liked the old comparison between Spurrier and Pitino. Two ego-maniac collegiate head coaches who had tremendous success. Mistakenly thought they could do it in the big leagues and were WRONG. Came back to college and were never quite as successful. All three suspect human beings.

I was just about to say that. Can't leave "Lietrino" off this list. As a matter of fact, I'd put him at the top of the list. He, apparently believes that integrity is a disease and he doesn't want any of it. :thumbdn::thumbdn:
