Matchup could feature No. 1 (Brohm) and No. 2 (Woodson) 2008 draft picks!!

by Joey Johnston

It’s Louisville vs. Kentucky.

Or, if you prefer, it’s Kentucky vs. Louisville.

It’s a big game. It’s not even basketball season. And there’s even one doozy of a subplot.

Brian Brohm, the Louisville quarterback, vs. Andre’ Woodson, the Kentucky quarterback.

Which brings us to a question from Bill Stein of Oceanside, Calif.

Bill asks: Is Louisville-Kentucky really the matchup of the top two QB prospects in next year’s NFL draft? We’ve seen Brian Brohm and know what he can do. What’s so special about the Wildcats’ Andre’ Woodson?

Well, Bill, the NFL draft obviously is eons away. First-round fortunes can be altered with the blink of an eye — or a great workout — so it’s premature to speculate.

But you might be right. Even if you’re not right on the mark, you’re awfully close. Brohm and Woodson certainly look like first-rounders. They are No. 1 and No. 2, according to some of the draftniks who already are rating players. And their presence makes for an incredibly entertaining backdrop to the game, which has been dominated recently by Louisville.

Things changed last season — drastically.

I think he's got his draft order backwards...

This is all talk until UK steps up and proves it can play college football at a competitive level with other top 25 schools. UK has flirted with this in the past, but with a couple of exceptions has usually proved to be more hype than anything else.

I think U of L is riding the coattails of their performance last year and is overrated. They have serious problems on defense that are not going to be fixed by "adjustments". Sooner or later the offense is going to have an off game, and then look out. I don't see them beating Rutgers or West Virginia with this defense. Even if they beat UK, look for them to lose 3-4 games this year.

U of L has had a nice couple of years, but to say they are anywhere near the elite is college football is laughable. The have had good teams with cheesecake schedules. The top ten teams they have had for the last couple of years would have lost 3-4 games in a major conference such as the Big 10, SEC, Big 12, or Pac 10. The Big East is better than CUSA, but nowhere near the other major conferences in terms of top to bottom competition in the conference.

U of L has dominated lately because of the handcuffs of probation. St X could have dominated UK over the last few years. Probation is now over, and the competition begins for real. UK should be able to compete with U of L now that the numbers are back. We'll see what happens.

That being said, I like the direction Brooks and Barnhart are headed. If they can have a breakout year this year, and follow it up with a top 25 recruiting class in February, I think UK football may be off and running. But you gotta beat good teams on a regular basis before people will start to take your program seriously.
