View Full Version : UK billboards around Louisville

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting a bit perturbed about the number of Louisville media pundits who are making a big deal out of the "Believe in Blue" billboards that UK has put up in Jefferson County, acting as if UK has no right to do so.
Excuse me, but the last time I checked, Louisville and Jefferson County are still part of Kentuky, and I believe the UK alumni chapter in JC is one of the largest chapters going. What are they supposed to do? Crawl under a rock and hide? Especially during rivalry week? Gimme a break!
Most of the time, I don't pay any attention to it, but occasionally, this "we're Louisville and we're holier than thou" stuff gets under my skin.
OKay, so much for the soap box routine. I feel better now. :icon_biggrin:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the University of Louisville athletic department that put up a billboard on I-64 that says "We're miles ahead"?
Seems to me that's a not-so-subtle dig at UK.
All UK's billboards say is "Believe in Blue". (At least the one I've seen.)
So, what's the big deal, Louisville media?

The billboards are appropriate. That city is a huge fan base for the University, and it is great publicity for people traveling through the state.
In addition, they do have their billboards in "traditional UK markets", and it seems a bit contradictory to be concerned with the inner-city Louisville boards.
Pot, meet kettle.

One of the UL players called UK "Lexington", saying, "this is Louisville - that's Lexington."

I do recall at one time in Lexington UofL was advertising down there.. and no one cared. Oh well.... the city of Louisville believes and I will stick with a statement that I have stated for a long time. Not only does UK have a bigger following in the state, but ALSO in Louisville. And to prove it just walk around on campus at UofL any given day and you will see plenty of people wearing UK stuff, and no one has ever said anything to me about it (except from time to time).

What Louisville media pundits are acting as if UK has no right to do such?
What are they saying that indicates Kentucky has no right?
Not a challenge, just a question.
I've heard that Brohm and other UofL players are using those billboards as motivation - and I've seen and read local media reporting such, but nothing as of yet where a local media person intimates that UK has no right to do such.
Thanks in advance. :)

We have a few of those signs here in Bowling Green. I absolutely love them!

Bozich made reference to it in his column today, but in fairness to him, his wasn't all that bad. I would have to go back and dig them up, but Eric Crawford has mentioned it, and there have been a couple of other times it's been mentioned in some smaller articles.
I've also noticed it in some ESPN and Sportsline columns, too.

I read Bozich's column as well. All he's done is report on it from the standpoint of UofL players take on it as well as Jurich's. I believe Jurich's been asked about it earlier. Of all the stuff I've seen thus far I never once got the impression that the author intimated that UK has no right to place them - certainly Douglas has intimated such.
IMO, it's a newsworthy item to drum up reader sentiment. Same if UofL billboards were placed throughout Lexington - the commentary amongst fans and players, etc., is or should be news-worthy.

If my first post came off like I was mad about it, I'm really not.
I just think it's sort of amusing that it's been mentioned SO much, and when UofL put that billboard up on I-64, it was a "ha ha, look how clever Jurich is", and the UK billboards are looked at (in the context of the story) like UK is somehow 'intruding' on UofL's turf, and pointed to as a motivator for the UofL players.
IMO, if you're a UofL fan, or vice-versa, and you hear the players talking about how a billboard is that much of a motivating factor, I'd be a little concerned. Surely they have better things to focus on, no?

I didn't get the impression anyone was mad about it, just questioning the original characterization of the media regarding them.

IMO, it's only "news" because someone in the media has asked the players about it in order to get an easy story. Were I a player, I'd have said, "I think the billboards are great." Deflates the pregame "story" the reporter was hoping to get.
However, I never got from any of the reporters that they themselves felt UK was "intruding". From players and fans, sure.
When Jurich was asked about it, he said he'd sell such advertising to UK for billboards in PJCS if they wanted.

From players and fans, sure.
Well, as the man once said: "What do you expect from a pig but a grunt?"
or
"You don't beat a dog for peeing on a fire hydrant. It's a dog. That's what they do."
I guess, for me, it shows no matter how much success UofL has, they (the fans and players) still have a little bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to UK.
Maybe I'm a bad person for this, but, well, I think that's kind of funny.

Let me say that I didn't mean to imply that ALL the Louisville media was coppin' an attitude about the UK billboards. It's just that I heard and read enough of it that I was getting a bit annoyed, that's all.

UL putting up billboards around Frankfort has to be a waste of money IMO. Honestly I'm not sure how UK or UL putting them up in Louisville or elsewhere does much for either school, or how it's a wise expenditure.

I don't disagree.
I don't begrudge either team for posting the billboards, more power to `em.
I don't begrudge fans of either team disliking them, either.
I think they'd get their money's worth, however, if they both intended on offering scholly's to more in-state kids. That's who they should be aimed at - and maybe they are with regard to football.

I agree with JPS, putting up signage is not going to change any fans allegiance, nor change the outcome of Saturdays' game.

I talked to a girl today who dates one of UofLs guard. She was telling me that the players and coaches avoid driving past the billboards at all costs

I love the billboards. Just wish they would put one of Wesley's or Braxton's here in town. I blow my horn every time I drive by them.

Those signs always make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside....
I seriously doubt a billboard is going to make it where you are going to win or lose a football game though...at least not like this.
