My wife has joined the WCN and when she tried to make her first post, she got a message that said something about the post would appear as soon as it was approved by the moderators.
Is that a part of the process now or what exactly?

There are certain things that are filtered for new users in order to keep spammers from being able to post. It seems odd that something she posted would have been caught by the filter though... weird.

It was just a link to a video about UK. It eventually posted, so whatever it was cleared up.

I approved her posts but that link is what set it off as spammers normally post links in their first post (a dead giveaway if you are a spammer). Her post will be ignored now as she makes more posts (over 5).
