Sportswriter Chip Cosby faces DUI, drug charges
COVERS UK FOOTBALL; PLEADS NOT GUILTY
By Greg Kocher
CENTRAL KENTUCKY BUREAU
VERSAILLES - A sportswriter for the Lexington Herald-Leader has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence and marijuana possession charges in Woodford County.
Robin W. "Chip" Cosby Jr., who covers University of Kentucky football, is scheduled to appear Monday in Woodford District Court before Judge Vanessa Dickson.
The Louisville resident was arrested by Kentucky State Police on Jan. 20 after being pulled over on U.S. 60 about 5 miles west of Versailles, according to court records.
"While I maintain that I was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, I certainly should have used better judgment in this particular situation," said Cosby, who has written for the paper since 1995. "I'm looking forward to my day in court, and from there I will use this as a learning experience and try to put it behind me. I would like to express my sincerest apologies to my family and to the Herald-Leader for any hurt or embarrassment that this incident may have caused."
Herald-Leader Editor Marilyn Thompson said yesterday, "This is a personnel issue we are dealing with now, and I have no further comment."
Cosby, 32, was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer shortly after midnight when he was stopped for speeding by police, according to court records. Trooper A.R. LaGrange wrote that Cosby "was unsteady on his feet" and had "red bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol." In the vehicle's middle console was a can of Bud Light beer, "open and cold to touch," LaGrange wrote.
LaGrange also wrote that he could see marijuana residue on the vehicle's floorboard. Later, after Cosby gave consent for a search, LaGrange and Trooper Bernie Napier found two tins with marijuana, rolling papers and a marijuana pipe with marijuana residue in the console and passenger floorboard.

Looks like the LHL eats their own, too,and not just UK by reporting on a misdemeanor.

I hate reading this news. Chip Cosby is my favorite among those at the LHL, the onewho has seemed to treat thefootball program the most fairly.

The Lexington Tabloid Leader is the king of dirty laundry in the bluegrass. They sure botched the story on Mr. Hayes, last year. It took a real reporter, from the now defunct Lexington Snitch, to get to the truth.
That rag is a real classy organization. All the area schools need to make sure that they invite them on career day. By the way, if Cosby had been more anti-UK in his column, they probably would have kept this incident quiet.

You can't be serious about that first comment.
Are you talking about Woodburn's article on the Hayes incident?
Go back and read it again. Nothing altruistic in Woodburn's article. He spends the first half blasting Hayes for being a player, then he launches into the strangest, dirtiest, most underhanded piece of journalism I've ever read.
You and I must have different definitions of what constitutes a "real reporter."

is "...'cause he was high!!!" I thought that someone who thinks the football team is moving in the right direction should make this joke before someone who doesn't. Steal their thunder so to speak.

Yes, yes I am serious. I don't know which article that you read and I appolgize for not having a link, but your interpretation is not what I got from the coverage of the Hayes' story. LHL portrayed Hayes asa possible assailant. The snitch article rightly portrayed Hayes as the victim and his accuser as a gold digger trying to make things right with her husband, by saving face and claiming assault. Moral issues aside, Hayes was dragged through the mud by the Lexington media and a few posters on fan sites who did not wait to get all of the facts in before passing out the moral outrage.
By the way, a real reporter wouldattempt to goto the accuser to get the story. That is what the Snitch writer did.

It's a shame this was Cosby and not Clay or Story.

Somehow he'll blame this on the covering the football team driving him to his addictions

Woodburn began the article with a story about being at Applebee's one night when Chuck Hayes hit on his girlfriend. Totally unnecessary and irrevelant detail when you're investing in a (ostensibly) facts-based piece of reportage. Plus, that kind of detail is like a bomb in an article concerning a rape allegation.
He then went on to completely and totally stalk the victim. In the article, he admitted to calling her repeatedly and (if I remember correctly) sitting outside her house and waiting on her to come home. Many of the facts he dug up were arbitrary and not directly correlated to the investigation, but rather corollary evidence that ended up really dragging both Hayes and the accuser through the muck.
You're right that Woodburn didn't outright try and implicate Hayes.
But what he was doing with that piece was NOT pro-Hayes. It was just downright bizarre.
A few weeks after that Snith piece came out, Woodburn told one of the guest on his radio show to not mention Chuck Hayes. And then he (Woodburn) mentioned Chuck Hayes.
Woodburn's a hack.

Lav,
He's a whole lot better class of hack, than the LHL hacks that reported on the Hayes story. If you read the "timeline" that he presented, the "stalking" of Hayes by the accuser, and the Wildcat Lodge video of the accuser and Hayes leaving arm in arm smiling, how could you conclude anything else than what Woodburn concluded? Yes, he investigated her because her story was fishy. I appreciate his effort over the blind journalism by the rest of the hacks.

All the same, if Cosby is smokin' da weed, it's best to keep him away from the program.
Not that I don't know that the players can't get it if they want to, but it's probably best to have him distanced from the program anyway.

FWIW, the da weed was in the football dorm in the early 70's.

Herald-Leader Editor Marilyn Thompson said yesterday, "This is a personnel issue we are dealing with now, and I have no further comment."
I wonder if their news staff is content with similar answers from other entities or employers when other people are charged with crimes?
Seems to me they are saying "It's OK for us to bother the families of murder victims and that sort of thing, but don't bother us when our employee is charged with a crime; that's none of your business."

Their policies are pretty odd. This article was in yesterday's paper. They just won't let this one go. Wonder if they will pursue Chip like Chuck?
