Looks like his surgery was a bit more serious than what was let on before.

Hope he will recover fine...I think he could be a BIG TIME player.

"that the surgery Derrick Jasper went through earlier this year was of the "microfracture" variety "

Wow. He's really emulating Jason Kidd now.

Greg Oden just had microfracture surgery and he will be out for the year. I really wouldn't expect Jasper to be ready to start the season and red shirt season may have to take place. I don't why they kept this a secret for so long. The HIPPA laws are the only reason why I can think of.

Sounds like it might be in his best interest to be red-shirted. It is much better to play it safe than it is to try to come back too soon and be re-injured.

Not good news at all. :icon_redface:...And yes, HIPPA laws might have had something to do with it.

I have had 4 knee surgeries,

I have had this surgery (2nd surgery on left knee)...It required 4 bore holes to be drilled into the femur and two in the under side of the knee cap to promote blood flow.

It was not an easy recovery, and I was on crutches for 8 weeks, and was only allowed to do non impact exercises. Couldn't even do weight lifting.

It was 6 months before I was allowed to do any kind of Impact type exercise.

I hope he makes it back, but I would be doubtful depending on when his surgery was.

Just so everyone knows.. I am 36 and still playing B-Ball now... Derrick is young and in allot better shape than me leg strength wise. So he should be able to make it back 100%, how long it takes is the question.

I agree with the red shirt idea.

Right now Kentucky has terrible class balance with a huge overload in the Sophmore class. By redshirting him it actually might help with this problem. Yes I think class balance is a large thing when it comes to a college basketball program. By having class balance you avoid the up's and down's that come with large class and when they graduate.

this is exactly what Tubby NEVER did. I'm not sure why he was so against red-shirting players. If anything I think this could help Jasper and the Cats in the long run. I don't think he was going to contribute anything that we can't replace with other players this year. He gets another year to practice and get in shape and next year he could be fantastic!!

There are alot of things the ex-coach did that made us wonder.

Interesting that now that he's gone folks start to mention some negatives about Tubby. I used to do that when he was still our coach--and got roasted on about every site I visit. Fun anyhow!

Some folks on one of the premium sites are saying that they saw Jasper walking around over this past weekend and he wasn't limping or needing any assistance in walking. Too, there's some question there as to the accuracy of the guessing about his condition--being pointed out that the coach has voiced positive expectations about his early return.

At this point I'm not at all sure that any information has been intentionally misleading--or fact hidden from us fans.

From what I understand about this injury is that it varies a lot. Stoudamire's was bad because it was spread around the knee. Oden's isn't as bad because it 's isolated to one spot, but that spot is a decent size. Depending on the extensiveness of the injury, it would likely be necessary for Derrick to sit out a year. In the long run, much better for him and the team. If it is not very extensive, feasibly, he could play this year, but it seems unlikely that he would start the season. If he comes in, say, for the SEC play I think it would almost be better to Red Shirt him and play with what we have, unless of course, what we have is stinking the place up and Derrick could come in and help with that. A lot of speculation for an injury that we really have no insight into. I guess we'll have to trust the medical staff, the coaches, and Derrick to know what is best for him and for the team.

If anything I was one of the first one's to start noticing things. Believe me I was screaming when many had their ears wide shut.

Let's keep this to the topic started...Jasper's injury and recovery. I am praying for his recovery and also think he will be a "big time" player before his career is done.

GO CATS! :widcat:

Yikes, this does not sound good at all. I was wondering how Jasper was doing.

Hope he can get healthy enough to play. If not a red-shirt might be a good option.

I guess Ramel Bradley is going to play the point.

Here's to hoping that Jasper recovers nicely and is able to contribute to the team this year.

Actually, it's HIPAA and it stands for "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act." It's a law passed in 1996 that specifies how health data should be transmitted and standardized. But one of its major provisions is the security and privacy of health information about individuals. Doctors, clinics, hospitals, insurance companies, etc. -- and, in this case, schools --are required by law to protect the privacy of its member's and patient's health information.

That's why UK cannot release a lot of information about Jasper's (or any player's) health or medical procedures like they use to. They can get into a lot of legal trouble. I suspect in the future we will get even less than we get now.
