Gottfried has an axe to grind. He interviewed for the UK job and was turned down for Dumme.

I thought Gottfried was a candidate in 1990 when Bill Curry was given the job? I didn't know he was even in the running in 1997.

Nope, it was '97. It came down to Mumme, Gottfried and another guy that I can't remember his name at the moment.

Even though the distance between LSU's program and Louisville's is about as far as the east is from the west, As I recall, quite a few of them were predicting the Cardinals to steam-roll over UK as well. And we all know how that turned out and what's happened since.
Let 'em keep right on thinking that. ;)

There were four finalists to replace Bill Curry:
1) Hal Mumme;
2) Mike Gottfried, who even at the time was just a sportscaster on ESPN and had not coached since 1989;
3) David Cuttcliffe, who then as now was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee but in between was the head coach at Ole Miss for the 1999-2004 seasons (and who on balance did well at Ole Miss);
4) Larry Kirksey, who was then assistant coach for WRs for the San Francisco 49ers. It may be un-PC to say so but there was speculation at the time that he may have been on the list for diversity purposes only (he's black). It's now over 10 years later and he's still an assistant coach, at Middle Tennessee of all places. But, he is a Kentucky native, had been the head coach at Kentucky State, coached WRs and TEs at UK under Fran Curci for several years, and Joker Phillips has long considered him a mentor as a coach. He had been an assistant at Florida, Pitt and Alabama at the time he was being considered for the UK job.

And if idiot Newton would have hired Howard Schenllenberger we would have been title contenders every year since then...How one person can contain so much "stupid" is beyond me..What the hell was newton thinking? Oh thats right,he wasn't thinking...oh well..water under the bridge...

I actually think he was considered (along with Mike Shanahan and Roy Kidd, IIRC) when we hired Curry, just not as prominently as when we hired Mumme. . . .Gottfried was the preferred choice of our Head Men's BB coach in 1997. . . .I remember a fairly petulant remark TCFEBUK made on his radio show shortly after Mumme was hired, in a response to a comment about how much weight he [TCFEBUK] carried in the UK Ath Dept, he responded to the effect of "you can tell by who got hired as football coach that I what I think doesn't matter". . . .Ralph Hacker or somebody else or his own conscience must've gotten on to him because after the next commercial break he quickly added that he thought we had hired a good coach. . . . .I'm glad he didn't get his way, because IMO Gottfried would've been a disaster as our HC. . . . . .he's gotten in several snide comments about us ever since. . ..

I think I remember Mike Shanahan (Shananazi ;)) being offered the job and turning it down...he has gone from Mastermind to Master Bait (please don't throw me off the plane) in the last few years.

I don't remember that he had any big years at Pitt. . . he got that job after having some success turning around Murray State. . . .so he had some in-state connections as well . . ..

Schnelleberger's last go-round coaching in the state included losing to a 1-10 Bill Curry team. Then he went to Oklahoma and flamed out and was canned after one season. In December 1996 he would not have been a good hire for Kentucky.

He coached at Pitt and twice won 8 games there. Fans there at the time were still used to 11 and 12 win seasons. I'm not sure he had a winning season at any other school other than non-IA Murray State.

Yeah, I suppose that would explain why old Howard is coaching at that powerhouse Florida Atlantic instead of being the man at Oklahoma, wouldn't it?
I don't think the Sooner fans would agree with you.

I dont think a loss (unless its like last year as he claims) to the consensus #1 team in the nation and a team that Herbstreit believes has a legit chance to run the table in the SEC and go to the BCS title game will "expose us." Expose us as what?

Excellent point, flacat22. IF we lose respectably to LSU, it does not expose us to be anything more than a team that's not yet to the national championship level. LSU could well win out AND win both the SEC championship and national championship. We could lose the game and still be a very fine team, deserving of national respect, and have an outstanding season.

IMO Mumme was a better hire than Gottfried would have been.
Despite the recruiting mess, Mumme has been hired for 3 head coaching positions since December 1996. Gottfried has been hired for zero since the 1980s.

I am not trying to hijack the thread (again??) but I must disagree--at least with the point about Mumme being a good hire.
Selling your soul for a win is never a "good hire" and don't tell me Mumme didn't know what Basset was doing. Even if he didn't know, he (Mumme) should have known.
Mumme was a fraud and a cheat---and got caught. Good riddance.

sorry to propogate the hijacking, but I must defend (or explain) my comment which was criticized by the above quote. . . .nowhere in my comment did I suggest that Mumme was a good hire. . . .in years past on this board and on the old WCF I have argued against those waxed nostalgic about the Mumme days (O, Buddah, where art thou?) and wanted to blame the probation solely on Bassett. . .I don't see how any reasonable, objective observer could call the Mumme regime anything but an overall failure. . . .however, I maintain that we would have been no better off with Gottfried, even without the probation. . . .and we wouldn't have had a couple of years of cheap thrills like we got in 97-98. . . .and don't forget that those 2 years got us the Commonwealth expansion and a nice little winter trip to Tampa. . . .I just think (with the benefit of a lot of hindsight, of course) we could've done better than either one of them at the time. . . .

No. 1 LSU at No. 17 Kentucky
With Les Miles frequently using all four downs to gain 10 yards and the Wildcats ranking next to last in the SEC in rushing defense, the Tigers’ strategy against Andre’ Woodson might be to keep him sidelined while embarking on Jacob Hester-led, 12-play drives.
When Woodson does get in there, he’ll have a tough time dealing with Glenn Dorsey and the rest of LSU’s top-ranked defense.
It won’t be like last season’s 49-0 whitewashing in Baton Rouge, but the Tigers will make sure to take care of business and avoid the upset bug sweeping the nation.

Yes, along with NCAA violations, as I recall.
Also, slam C.M. for passing over Howard if you will, but Schnellenberger was never known to run the cleanest program in town, either. As most of you can surely remember - we've had more than a little trouble with that over the years. And, yeah - I know - you're gonna throw Bassett and Mumme in my face - but keep in mind - up to that time there were no skeletons in their closet.

We can't possibly know that until after the game is played. It is possible that msnbc is right but I am not giving up on my hopes until after the game.
