Not sure what I think about this. Given the Reds' financial limitations, I think they need someone who can do more with less consistently.
Is Dusty this guy?

I'm really not sure if he's the right gut or not. But I do know this. He took the Giants to game 7 of the World Series in 2002 and then took the Cubs to the brink of the World Series in 2003 before the Curse of the Billy Goat took over. The Reds have only had a brief flirt(1999) with playoffs since 1995. I am willing to wait and see what he does. For now I think it's a good hire. Like with most managers and coaches only time will tell if he can bring more out of the Reds than the past few have.

It's a good hire if they follow it up with signing some good middle relief pitching and 2 great starters...

Here are the potential free agents following the end of this season.

At least they're bringing in a guy who knows how to take a team to the World Series, instead of bringing up somebody from the minors who never coached in the bigs before.
And Lord knows if he could take a team with Barry Bonds and his ego to the World Series, the Reds ought to be a piece of cake.

I never had a problem with the Reds promoting from within. Dave Miley had a good record in Louisville and at Indianapolis before that. His managing record at every level within the organization was very good. This year he was named manager of the year as manager of the IL Triple A Scranton Wilkes Barre Yankees.
The Reds' problem isn't who they choose as manager. It's their stubborness in refusing to go 100% after quality pitching.
While I like Ken Griffey, Jr., the Reds made the mistake of going after Griffey rather than shoring up the pitching staff. They Reds were already a quality hitting team prior to trading for Griffey.
The Griffey acquisition proved they were more concerned about offense (new ball park needs lots of homeruns) moreso than pitching - and the team has suffered for it.
I'm not holding my breath for any big improvements with Baker.

i'm not sure dusty is the guy. i mean he's a good manager and will be better than what we've had in the past. my only question is why now???? why not wait until we know what is going on with larussa and torre. now, i know those two would be VERY VERY long shots and we probably wouldn't pay them what they wanted. but, if you want to make a splash and hire a big name. why not wait until you know what those two are going to do??? i also would've liked us to contact girardi and see if he was interested. oh well, guess that's why i'm not on the payroll.
