The tables were packed with all things Big Blue: Shirts, golf club covers, signs, flags, pictures.
All of them featured the iconic K of the University of Kentucky. All designed to make sure the 1,500 fans who paid $40 to see new men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie preach at a luncheon in Louisville were outfitted with everything they needed to get ready for one of the most anticipated seasons in the history of the program.
Yet the trendiest item turned out to be something you couldn't find on any of the tables. A white T-shirt, newly pressed, the phrase "LS-Who?" at the top and the score of last week's stunning triple-overtime 43-37 win over the formerly top-ranked Tigers right underneath.
The shirts, available at a regional department store for $14.99 and worn by more than a handful of fans, were more than a fashion statement. They were the latest sign that football -- yes football -- has finally, maybe, hopefully arrived in the land of horses and hoops.
Need proof?

I'm sick and tired of this. UK has been top 35 in attendence since EVER. UK is usually top 25 in attendence. It was the first school to get national championships in both the major men's sports in a year. UK is one hell of football school. It is the best basketball school. It could be the best at both this year. I'm sick and tired of writers talking about it as if we can't dominate in both. UF just did it. It's our turn to do it again.

Ohio State did it too. There is a rabid OSU fan where I work who never hesitates to remind me that "Ohio State is a football AND a basketball school, and a better one than UK in both categories." That gets my blue blood boiling. There is no reason we can't field a top-25 team consistently in football, while having great basketball, too.

How can anyone say that Ohio State is a basketball school. They been good the past few years but besides that they really haven't been all that impressive. quite rediculous

No kidding. Ohio State has mostly been decent and sometimes good in basketball, and has had more than a few years where they stunk up the Big Ten. But still, the point of the jab was that they can do it in both sports - so let's keep it going on the football field!

1951 is beyond memory of many reading here. At the age of 4, I certainly only know about it from hearing my Dad talk and reading the records.
BTW, my Dad is 84 and said he hasn't enjoyed a game (LSU game) this much since Blanton Collier left town. He even got my 80 year old anti-sports mother to watch the game. She loved it. This team will steal your heart.
Beat Florida and we can start the chant "We're number 1 !" and mean it. I've never heard it at a UK football game. I'm 60.
Actually, I've never saved my ticket stubs until this year. 1977 was nice, but we weren't going anywhere. Beat Florida and I start making reservations.
