Tennessee won’t get a chance to sway Alcoa quarterback Randall Cobb.

The Tornado senior and 2007 Class 2A Mr. Football back recipient reconfirmed his commitment to the University of Kentucky Wildcats on Tuesday, canceling his scheduled official visit this weekend to UT’s campus.

“I wanted to reconfirm that commitment,” said Cobb, hosted last weekend at Kentucky by former teammate Kyrus Lanxter. “Everything just felt real comfortable and felt like home. Kentucky had everything I was looking for.”

Cobb initially gave his verbal commitment to Kentucky last July and said he appreciated the coaching staff’s candor following his official visit over the weekend.

“They were really straight up with me, and I liked that,” said Cobb, a four-time state champion for the Tornadoes. “They didn’t just tell me what I wanted to hear, and I respect that. I just felt really comfortable at Kentucky.”

Great link! Thank you.

The staff does it again. I see nothing but a great future for this football program. I would recommend that you all get a season ticket now. It is the best deal in America and it will only become harder to get in the future.

Next year is now!!!!!!

Alcoa High School senior quarterback Randall Cobb has decided to remain committed to Kentucky.
Cobb said Tuesday night that he has canceled his official visit to Tennessee set for this weekend. He called Tennessee assistant coach Dan Brooks to alert him of the decision.
Tennessee’s new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson also got a call from Cobb.
“He was supposed to come over to the house tonight (Tuesday night),” said Cobb, the 2007 Class 2A Mr. Football back. “But I called him and told him I’m firmly committed to Kentucky, that it wouldn’t be a good idea to come over.”
Cobb committed to Kentucky in June. He went on a visit to Lexington this past weekend and by the time he returned Sunday, he knew Kentucky was definitely the place for him.
“It was so good, talking with all the coaches and the players,” said Cobb. “It was perfect with all those guys. It just felt like home up there to me.”
Cobb rushed for 793 yards and 13 touchdowns on 88 carries this past season, also passing for 1,765 yards and 22 touchdowns on 89-for-138 passing. He threw only two interceptions in 15 games.
Cobb was intrigued by the avenue of possibly getting to play quarterback at Tennessee. That was something he thought he may not get to do at Kentucky, until this past weekend. Cobb said he “miscomprehended” what Kentucky quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders, a former UT offensive coordinator, had told him in a previous visit. Cobb said Tuesday he will get the chance to practice with the quarterbacks and attend the quarterbacks meetings and get a look at wide receiver. Cobb said Sanders nor coach Rich Brooks ever lied to him, and that when Sanders was thinking of possibly leaving to be coach at Western Carolina that he was “straight up” with Cobb about it.
Cobb also said he could be returning kicks and punts.
Now that the recruiting process has slowed, Cobb can return to normalcy.
“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “It has caused stress on my family. I just want that to be gone now.”

In his mind, Randall Cobb kept going back and forth.

Kentucky or Tennessee? Tennessee or Kentucky?

The University of Kentucky had recruited him the longest. He had given his word that he would play college football in Lexington.

But all that was before Cobb's home-state school, the University of Tennessee, told the quarterback of the 2A state champion Alcoa Tornadoes that he would have a scholarship in Knoxville.

A Tennessee kid who all but grew up in the shadow of Neyland Stadium felt the pull of running through the 'T' onto the field before 100,000-plus fans.

Cobb ran his choice over and over and over in his head.

Finally, he made the call every one expected him to make.

Phillip Fulmer did not answer his cell phone when Cobb first dialed.

When the UT head man called back, Cobb says the coach apologized for missing the player the first time. "Randall, I'm out trying to find you some future teammates," Cobb remembers Fulmer saying in a cheerful voice.

What happened next may have been the biggest college football surprise since Appalachian State visited the Big House.

"Coach," said Tennessee's Class 2A Mr. Football, "that's what I was calling about. I'm canceling my visit to Tennessee. I'm solid with Kentucky."
