This one touched me. I thought I would share it. Maybe it will touch you too? Maybe it is just me having raised 3 daughters? :)

The Mother said "She keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to this shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of this," the woman told the volunteer."What is it she keeps asking for?" she asked."Puppy size!""We have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for.""I know. We have seen most of them," she said in frustration.

Just then the young child came walking in the office."Well, did you find one?""No, not this time," she said with sadness in her voice. "Can we come back on the weekend?"The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed. "You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's always a supply," the volunteer said.

The young child took her Mother by the hand and headed to the door."Don't worry, I bet we'll find one this weekend," the child said.Over the next few days both mom and dad had long conversations with her. They both felt she was being too particular."It's this weekend or we're not looking any more," Dad finally said in frustration."We don't want to hear anything more about "puppy size" either," mom added.

Sure enough they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now the young child knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs.Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first row of cages.

There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren't permitted. The young girl walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said, "Sorry, you're not the one."

It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely. This time she it took a little longer."Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!" she screamed with joy.

Mom, startled by all the commotion, came running."What? Are you sure? How do you know?" she asked."It's the puppy sighs!""Yes, it the same size as all the other puppies you held the last few weeks," mom said."No, not "size". "Sighs." When I held him in my arms he sighed," she said."So?""Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me "Love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sighs!"

The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug her child she did a little of both."Mom every time you hold me I sigh. When you and Daddy come home fromwork and hug each other you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms," she said.

Then holding the puppy up close to her face she said, "Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart."Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day. They are they sighs of God.

How ironic that you would post this justnow. Thursday as I was pulling into the driveway, I noticed a tiny face peering out from under some leaves. When I got out of the car to investigate, this little ball of fur literally explodes out of the leaves and starts chasing the blowing leaves all over the front yard - having the time of his life. It was a beautiful little puppy, and I assumed he was from next door, so I left him to play.

Later, my wife came in with him and said "Look what I found!". He had been at the garage doornosing around and ran right up to her to be picked up. We live in a country neighborhood where all the houses are on at least 10 acres, so I drove up and down the street looking for his owner. No one knew anything about him.

So we called the humane society and filed a "found dog" report, and given the circumstances, they told us that he had probably been dumped by someone. We immediately came to the same decision "he is NOT going to the pound !" and we will take care of him. Our daughter had planned on getting a dog this year anyway, and our son in law wanted to rescue one when the time came, so we made a call to them.

I'm very pleased to say that "Leon" (he looks like a little lion) will have a good home for as long as he lives. We are going to keep him until June, at which time he is going to Austin TX to live with them. We took him to the vet Saturday, who also agreed that he had been dumped. He is only 6 months old and weighs barely7 pounds, and the vet was smitten immediately! In fact, when we looked at the bill, we realized that he basically donated his time for Leon. Full exam, stool test and rabies shot for $28. Thank you Doctor Vice of Gainesway Small Animal Clinic - you are truly a class act !!!!

And if this baby truly was dumped out on the road and left to find his own way, I just want to say to whoever did this that you chose the right house! No one here will ever treat an animal like that. Thank you for giving him up - you didn't deserve him !

Finally, there is great irony here as well. Some of you from the other board literally cried with me when we had to put both our Goldens down in 2004. And it was Doctor Vice who helped Sandy go peacefully then. But Saturday was the "payback". All the oohing and aahing from the girls in the office, the joy of watching Leon lick Doctor Vice's face, etc., only further confirmed our decision to keep this puppy.

I feel like I have been given a great gift. Don't know if the puppy sighed, but we did.

I am so glad that puppy found you Dave, it amazes me the way that people treat animals like disposable possessions instead of living beings. Unimaginable!!!

Dave, what a great story. No matter how broken your heart over the loss of a dear friend, nothing can open you up like the love of another little furry angel. So what happens in June when the pup goes to Austin? Are you ready for another one of your own?

I'm guessing that by June Dave's too attached to let him go anywhere and gets DD & DSIL another pup of their own;)

Dave, thanks a bunch for sharing such a wonderful story with us. Sounds like that little guy stumbled into your life exactly when he was supposed to. I am happy for you and for that puppy. Sounds like it was meant to be.

This story, including the part about your loss of Sandy and what she meant to you, is something you should share with Readers Digest. That is RD material if I have ever heard any. :)

Are you ready for another one of your own?

Actually, we already have one. The electric guitar that I was sure I was getting for Christmas in 02 turned out to be a Welsh Corgi puppy. We picked him up in Feb 03 and brought him home just in time for the ice storm the next dayand no electricity for a week.

The joke is that after the third day, we figured Dewi was saying "damn! - can I maybe go back and see if I can get a family that pays their light bill?"

He is a super dog! He has been totally patient with the puppy and they have gotten along since day one. The two house cats, on the other hand, (who were here before either dog) went crazy. "Holy xxxx, another one !!"

So we will all miss the pup, but I know he will be in good hands !!
