I seem to always wander to the boards close to a UK game of some sort, even though I spend far more time online killing people in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars than posting rants. For those that have ADD, I'll summarize my rant at the bottom of the post. I tend to rant and rave, and it's my time I spent typing this, and if you don't want to read that's completely your option and I wish you the best whether you read this or not.
/Start Rant
So I'm sitting here at work, watching some couples wander into my movie theatre to see the new Christmas* comedy Fred Claus. In between trying to get a 17 year old female to actually perform her job as a concession employee and wondering if this current generation of teenagers can really tie their own shoes, I keep reading threads about UK basketball and football posts. Stories, facts, opinions, soap-boxes, the whole 9 yards or 94 feet. My thoughts tend to wander around to Vince Vaughn, probably my favorite comedic actor, with legendary performances (in my opinion) in Dodgeball & Old School.
So many posts, so many topics, so many threads. Mainly about the apparent afterlife's lesser option freezing over. Let's all go ahead and put this loss behind us. Everyone is saying who gets paid to tell other people their opinions that this is our worst loss EVER. Well it is. Every loss is our worst loss EVER, until our NEXT LOSS. Don't you or anyone else try to take something away from our opponent, in this case Gardner Webb. They apparently played a heck of a ball game. Good for them, good for their kids, and good for their program.
I'll go ahead and say every L in our Loss column is the same. They all count the same. Each L = one. Just the same as each victory counts as ONE. There's no ASTERISK (sorry Barry Bonds) attached to this ONE loss that will somehow affect the oxygen we breathe. If UK wins the NCAA championship this year, our record will show we won XX games and hopefully only lost X games. Often I hear about how Kentucky has the most wins out of ANYONE else in NCAA history. Curiously, they don't go into depth and say how many of those wins were won by 1 point. Or 2 points. Or how many we had to come back from behinid to win. Or how many were won in the last 2 minutes, how many against ranked opponents, or how many times we were underdogs. They only count WINS and LOSSES. There are no clauses (see the movie reference?) tied to any of those wins or losses. So stop trying to compare lions and lambs, or biggest loss ever or worst loss ever or whatever else you can think of or someone on TV or the radio waves says and just realize one thing: It's a loss. I can promise you that Coach G, and any other Coach will say: We lost. Not "That's our worst LOSS EVER KIDS" or anything else remotely close to that. Coaches count wins and losses, and from both they take away certain things to say we did well, and things we need to improve on.
You often wonder about the integrity of people. I remember reading an article about one of the Steinbrenner kids talking trash about Joe Torre, and the writer bashed the Steinbrenner kid. He bashed him for not making enough deposits at the Bank of Respect, something Joe Torre had done for 12 years. It seems the withdrawls from the Bank of Respect come frequently from people who don't deposit enough themselves. This one goes out to all the people who blame Mr. Orlando Smith. You've overdrawn your account, and the Bank of Respect would like to officially invite you to permanently close your account. Thank you and have a wonderful day. How stupid can you be? While I will sit here and have God behind me and say that I never preferred Mr. Orlando Smith's coaching style or recruiting, the man was the definition of tact, respect, class, and a fantastic representative of the human race.
People often brag about the UK tradition. I see people's signatures in their posts about the number of titles, other people's quotes about our history, our name, our program, etc etc etc. It sickens me to hear about the booing in Rupp Arena. I hope you idiots that boo your team actually have enough backbone to boo your kids team when they are getting whooped. I hope you are at least consistent enough to boo your own kid, and not someone else's. You want to boo the opposing kids when they run on the court? I have no problem with that. Especially Louisville or Florida. In fact, I encourage it. But that's called the HOME COURT ADVANTAGE. Jeering your own team is something idiots do, and I don't want to be associated with idiots. I don't have kids, and I played Little League baseball years ago. I remember our team losing every game of the season except ONE. The last game we WON. My parents never booed me at the game. It's a low-life thing to boo your team. If you're upset with someone else's KIDS performance, then vent here on the boards or to your bartender. Don't vent infront of them, and don't even give them, God hope not, MORE PRESSURE to perform at home. This is UK. Last I checked, we kinda put a lot of pressure on our program anyway. Heck, we have more people show up to practice than some schools have ENROLLED.
I'm going to the UK/Vandy football game. I plan on booing the Vandy kids when they take the field, just as I suspect the Vandy fan I'm going with will boo the UK kids when they take the field. But if UK gets it's butt whooped, and I see you boo or hear it, I will ask you to remove your Blue and White.
Well, we're nearing the end of my rant for the week. After almost 18 months of service in the entertainment industry, I'm taking a week's vacation. A week where I don't have to stay here till 1am, or work a weekend straight. What I do isn't life saving or mind blowing. In fact, I'm convincing myself daily that a trained chimp can probably do my job. I told my district manager that this job was not some nuclear level engineering job at Oak Ridge and I wasn't putting people into space.
*It's actually Christmas. Not X-mas. We don't go around shorting other holidays in the vain of being completely LAZY. Nobody says Mem Day or Vet Day or Colo Day or Lab Day or anything else. Stop being lazy and type it out.
/End Rant
Summary for ADD people: Everyone has opinions. Vince Vaughn rules in comedies. Every loss counts the same. Stop bashing Tubby. What good is tradition when you boo your own team? See you at the UK/Vandy game. I'm taking a vacation. It's Christmas, not xmas.
See you at the Vandy game!
