'It just looks bad,' Hayes says of upset
EX-CAT RECALLS LIVING THROUGH LOSS IN LEXINGTON

By Jerry Tipton
JTIPTON@HERALD-LEADER.COM

The loss to Gardner-Webb surprised former Kentucky star Chuck Hayes. When asked what he knew about Gardner-Webb before Wednesday, he said he would have thought it was a children's book.

The Associated Press asked Hayes, now in his second season with the Houston Rockets, about the Kentucky loss. Here are highlights:

Question: How big a loss was it for Kentucky?

Answer: It's really bad, because in March, when they stack up wins and losses and who you lost against, this one is bad. It's a long season. But it just looks bad, man. If it could've been anybody else, I would've been fine with it. It just looks bad.

Q: Is it as bad as Appalachian State beating Michigan?

A: The only thing that makes the Michigan game a little bit worse than this one is Michigan was top-5. Still, the programs are the same. I'm going to make a phone call or two down to Lexington.

Q: How do you think the media up there will treat Kentucky Coach Billy Gillispie?

A: I'm pretty sure his e-mail is pretty stacked up. I'm pretty sure the guys didn't want to go to class today. When you lose in Lexington, it's like the whole world is looking at you and pointing the finger at you like, "How could you? You don't lose at Rupp."

Q: What was your worst experience at Kentucky with a loss?

A: We lost to Louisville my junior year at Rupp. Me and a couple of guys went out to eat afterwards. The service was terrible. It went like an hour and a half just for my appetizer. You lose at Rupp -- and we lost to Louisville -- that was bad.

A couple of guys probably didn't go to class today. They probably did not want to show their face in that psychology class because people are going to ask them, "What happened? How could you?"

:shrug1: Whining?? I thought he was answering the questions asked.? I think Chuck has every right to be as disappointed if not more disappointed than UK fans in the team's performance against Gardner Webb.

What part of that was whining? He was asked a question and he answered it. It wasn't like he called a special press conference just to address the UK situation.

Others have commented, so I apologize for piling on. But really. Whining??? I'd love to see some elaboration on how you construed those comments to be whining. If you'd be up to it, of course.

Chuck still bleeds blue.

Yes he does and he always will. I hope to see him someday, when his playing days are over, raising his family somewhere in Kentucky. I hope to see him working for UK in some capacity. Perhaps in broadcasting, I believe that is what he studied. Chuck is still 'da man and he doesn't whine.

GO BIG BLUE!!!

That guy is one of my all time faves. Heart of a lion and always had the eye of the tiger. Starts on one of the better NBA teams.

Chuck was right. It hurt to get beat by GW, that was part 1. If GW goes to New York and gets beat blown out than that hurts double at the end of the year when the RPI counts. I'm not whining just stating fact.

You were right in your original thought. Chuck Hayes is NOT a whiner. Chuck just loves UK and knows the psychology of UK fans.

I'm not saying what he said isn't factual. I'm sure it is. But most of the time when people whine, it's about are real problems.

It just bugs me whenever I hear UK basketball players complain about how it's so hard to play at Kentucky. Chuck got poor service at a resturant after a bad loss? The horror!!!

I wonder if he ever got really good service (or some nice perks on the side) after a win? Maybe he mentioned that in the interview and it got left out of the story, but I doubt it.

That's why it's whining in my book. If you're going to complain about the bad things associated with being a UK basketball player, at least take the time to say something like, "But all the good things far outweighed those bad things."

My take is that he meant it as an example of UK basketball's importance to fans. I'd think it would be a plus to be in a place where what you do matters so much and, at least from what I know of the man, I believe he welcomed the challenge and passion for the sport in Lexington. From the loyalty and hard work he demonstrated while a UK player, I also believe his following it up with a comment about how the good outweighed the bad was understood without stating it.

By no means indicative of whining. He's simply telling it like it is with regard to the ridiculous rabidness of some among the fanbase. No excuse whatsoever for such treatment over a GAME. Just as there's no excuse really for providing perks because of winning a GAME.

I've often stated that because of the fanbase, coaching at Kentucky is the best job and the worst job all in one - just as playing at Kentucky is the best experience and the worst experience for a player..............
