Brooks conceded that his team’s play has tailed off in recent weeks, a development he chalked up in part to more relaxed practices designed to keep his banged-up team healthy.
“I probably lightened up too much in practice trying to get everybody healthy, and we forgot that football is a game of blocking and tackling,” Brooks said. “We will do a lot of that this week, and if we get somebody dinged, we’re going to get somebody dinged, but we’re going to go back to fundamentals. So you can lay it on my shoulders.”
Brooks said he also instituted light practices earlier this season and the Cats (7-3, 3-3) responded. But in last week’s 27-20 win against Vanderbilt, Brooks said, his team was aggressive but “didn’t play in sync all the time.”
So in preparation for the Bulldogs (8-2, 5-2), UK will get physical – though it will do so, at least early in the week, without some key players.
Though Brooks said UK escaped the Vandy game without significant injuries, some players – including tailback Rafael Little (back) cornerback Trevard Lindley (knee) and linebacker Micah Johnson (calf) – will sit out early in the week as a precautionary measure.
