Hayes likes the underdog role
Students of game laud contributions of Rockets forward

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kyle Lowry, the Memphis Grizzlies' blur of a point guard, caught Rockets rookie forward Carl Landry in a switch and immediately cleared out his teammates with designs of an unfettered flight to the rim.

On the opposite side of the floor, Rockets forward Chuck Hayes saw the impending trouble and moved into the lane toward Lowry. As expected, Lowry made his move and beat Landry, then saw Hayes coming over to stop him.

But Hayes had no intention of stopping anyone. Instead, he faked toward Lowry, and just as Lowry prepared to dish to a cutting teammate, Hayes backed off into the lane.

As he intercepted Lowry's pass and the Rockets headed the other way, former Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich, scouting the preseason game last month for the Lakers, said in that familiar rumble: "That's Chuck Hayes."

and it seems that knowledgable Rocket fans realize what Chuck brings to their team. He plays with and against the world's best players now and still brings all that hustle and sincere enjoyment of the game to the table just like he did when he played for the Cats. I love the nickname "Chuckwagon". Chuck always did pull the wagon for us. He was and is 'da man as far as this fan is concerned. I will always be grateful, as a Wildcat fan, that Chuck Hayes chose to play for us for four years.

My favorite part of the article was Rudy Tomjanovich's comments. He has forgotten more about the game of basketball than I will ever know, but he appreciates Chuck and all he can do for a team. Lots of fans never thought Chuck would make it in the League, you should never underestimate Chuck Hayes.

GO BIG BLUE!!!

Exactly, bleedblue79. Also, isn't it SO NEAT that doing the little things so well can result in a STARTING position on an NBA team! :) The undrafted "Mr. Underdog" should indeed not have been underestimated. :) I watch Chuck every chance I get and still so enjoy his play.

Too, my second-saddest moment in UK basketball history was when Chuck Hayes was so narrowly denied an appearance in a Final Four. That STILL breaks my heart, along with Laettner's shot in '92. :icon_cry: I had so badly wanted that for Chuck Hayes, who had so deserved it.
