Athens —- On the surface, it may seem as if Mark Richt was just having fun when he called for a "redout" at Saturday's home game against Kentucky. But deep down, the Bulldogs coach clearly has some concerns about an emotional letdown in the wake of this past weekend's victory over Auburn.
Georgia wore black jerseys and UGA fans dressed in black in answer to Richt's call for a "blackout" for the nationally televised game against Auburn. The No. 8-ranked Bulldogs seemed highly energized and rolled to a 45-20 victory.
Conversely, Saturday the Bulldogs play a nontraditional rival in Kentucky in a 12:30 p.m. game. That means the "Dawg Walk" will be at 10:45 a.m.
"I know that sounds early for the Bulldog Nation, but I think we saw last weekend what can happen when everybody gets together and does it right," Richt said.
What the Kentucky game lacks in tradition it makes up for in meaning. A Georgia win would clinch a tie for the SEC East championship.
"So we've decided to have a redout," Richt said during his weekly news conference Tuesday. "Everybody wear red. I think they'd do that anyway, but it'd be nice if everybody did that Saturday. It'd be nice if everybody got jacked up about wearing red. Maybe we'll wear black in our pregame warmup and come rushing out of the wearing red. Whatever it takes to get everybody excited, let's do it."
Georgia's players don't seem too concerned. They say championship pursuits, Senior Day and last year's 24-20 loss in Lexington should be incentive enough.
"There's plenty on the line," quarterback Matthew Stafford (http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/printedition/2007/11/14/gareport1114.html#) said. "This team beat us last year; they beat the No. 1 team in the country [LSU] this year; it's our last SEC game this season. This game is big for us. There's a ton on the line."
