I'm not trying to get anyone's hopes up, but could we be the impetus of Hopson's indecision?

From the C-J:
"The early signing period for college basketball begins Wednesday morning, but there's late news to report involving one of the state's top prospects..."

Did Coach Clyde even have a chance to recruit him hard before he committed to Mississippi St? I don't rememember.

Come home, Scotty!

could miller and hopson be the best duo coming out of ky in a while?

If Bud Mackey hadn't made possibly the world's most unwise decision it could have been a trio.

I think you're absolutely right. Another Kentucky high school player with big time talent is Scott County's Bud Mackey. It's a shame that he made some bad choices that will limit what schools he can go to. Still, somebody will take a chance on him, and I hope he makes good on that chance.

Was it Bud Mackey or Scotty Hopson that was caught with drugs in a school zone recently?

Mackey. There is a pretty good chance he will be in jail next year from the sound of things. A total waist. I don't think there is much wiggle room for dealing cocaine on school property.

The possible jail time is something that I didn't factor in in my previous post in this thread. That could spell the finish to his basketball career.

Would you want him at UK if he was eligible and wanted to come play for us?

I would have to say yes if we needed him, I mean give him a chance to rite his path. I know I would want one more chance to straiten myself up. Sometimes it takes people a while to realize what they have. If he breaks rules or does anything bad drop him simple as that. That what I think it may not be rite but w.e its MO.

I agree more or less.

Personally, I'm not a win-at-all-costs (read:compromised integrity) kind of guy, but I do believe in second chances. However, one has to demonstrate that they deserve that chance.

And yeah of course I want to win too. :)

Scotty Hopson could be a rare talent. Scotty is also a 6'5 or so swing man. Same as Jasper, Meeks, Legion, Miller, and Liggins.

If Scotty were to reneg and sign at Kentucky, I'm not sure it would be the best for his future...just because there are too many players in his position already.

We need a center or another power forward. We're OK at guard /sf....a for-real point guard would be nice, also. It's a shame that Kentucky's best players this year all seem to play the same position, but sometimes it just works that way.

I believe JamesOn Curry was caught in the same situation (only it might have been pot instead of cocaine) and he found a place at OK State.

I think if Mackey doesn't have to go to jail and if he wants to come here then we should be happy to have him, because he is a great player. I would expect we would keep him on a very short leash, though.

According to another site, he has not signed and may not until April.

I thought it was interesting in the article where Hopson's mother told the reporter that Scotty was going to sign with MSU on Friday. She said that the family had made the decision to not put the signing off and the reason that Scotty said he was thinking about waiting was because she hadn't had a chance to tell him yet that the decision was made. WHAT?

Who's making the decision here, the player or his mother? Not sure that it would be a good thing getting a player with that much "input" from his mother. Sounds like a Mitch Mustaine (QB from Ark that transferred because his family thought he should play more) situation looking to happen to me.

Of course, I might have just misread too much into the article and mom's comments. :shrug1:

His mother must be off her meds ! Because he should have been in the blue and white alll along..

This sounds ridiculous. Making the decision for him? Parents like the Patterson's were involved in recruiting in a good way. They were looking out for thier son, but the final decision was all PPat. If this is true, it would make you wonder why Mrs. Hopson is pu$hing him to M$U, wouldn't it?

I don't want to bad mouth the woman because she might just be looking out for her son's best interests, but you can see the financial implications in him going to Miss State vs. coming here. Here he'll be competing for playing time with Meeks, Liggins, Miller, etc. At Miss State he'll start right away and be able to put up huge NBA draft stock numbers.

Lotsa pressure points all around. Just giving some info I've picked up from local residents (and not the Hopson family themselves)

For whatever reason, UK was late, late, late in recruiting Scotty, especially compared to other schools. This didn't leave a good taste in the family's mouth.

By the time BG was signed and sealed at UK, the big push was Patterson
and Lucas. Legion was an early bonus....and a big athletic shooting guard built along Scotty's lines.... once again, Scotty was kind of pushed back.

If I remember my time lines correctly, SH had already announced his intention to sign with MissState BEFORE the new coaching staff came aboard. Difficult question: back off on your word now that things are different?

SH's family is doing what they can to get the best situation for him...and really not just for the next four years, but later on...good luck to all.

I know what you mean but...some kids might also be big fans but may not have the confidence to play for UK with all the pressure..would you want to play here and perform badly? Maybe he watched the game the other night and heard the boos..might scare a kid that isnt sure if he can come in right away and perform. Wildcat fans can be unforgiving at times.

I don't think that lack of confidence is an issue with Hopson. He's top 10 or 15 in the nation in a lot of experts' opinions. Why wouldn't he believe he could play at Kentucky and succeed?

If it were my decision, I would say, no. But if Coach Gillispie decides to offer Mackey, I would support his decision. I trust Coach Gillispie.

I really don't get the accusations of cheating, money, poor decision-making, etc. for Hopson. There are numerous factors that seem to make his commitment to them reasonable to me:

1) They recruited him hard from a very early time, much earlier than most schools got on him
2) They've produced a reasonable number of draft picks in recent years, and Jamont Gordon will be another
3) They've got beaucoup playing time available at his position (unlike us, and Hopson's mom specifically commented on that part of us)
4) No less than four of his very good friends from AAU ball were on the team at the time that he committed

Yes, those could all be factors. But a decision to attend Miss. State seems to be much like a decision to attend Florida State. A second-rate basketball school is a second-rate basketball school. I just don't see the lure of it. Even if they have been recruiting a guy for 100 years. But I'm not the one making the decision. So who am I to say?

Rick Stansbury is a very very likeable guy. As I have stated numerous times here over the past I went to college with him at a small school and shared a dorm that housed around 35 students, almost all athletes. If Rick is a cheater then I am the Pope. Take it for what it's worth.

Hey Gunsmoke, did you go to Campbellsville College? I graduated from there in 1972.
