A hotel costs $30. Three guys split the cost evenly ($10 a piece).

There is a problem with the room so the owner gives the bellhop $5 to give back to the guys.

The bellhop pockets $2, and each guy gets $1 back.

So now each guy paid $9 for the room.

But wait, what happened here.

$9 * 3 = $27 The bellhop has $2. $27 + $2 = $29

What happened to the other 1$?

Ignore taxes.

That one could be solved by a 1st grader.

Look at this as if the 3 were charged correctly. The room costs $25 or $8.33 per person. They paid $30 or $10 each and then got $1 dollar back (for a net of $9 each). The difference between what the room costs($25) and what each paid (3 x $9 = $27) is $2. The bellboy kept this. There is no extra dollar

Prove it...:P

Thats a good one. I've seen high school and college classes discussing this problem. While it is 'simple', the best riddles often are.

The step that gets you is when you say "27 + 2 = 29" There is no mathematical reason to add $2 to the $27. It should be a subtraction operation.

Thanks for the backup Littlemyer. While I would love to tell my teachers "I can make 100 on that test." there has to be a little thing called PROOF.
