View Full Version : So who plays for the national championship now?

West Virginia has lost to a weak Pitt team. The Big East now won't have a team in the national championship game.
Ohio State probably gets one spot. (The Big Ten should be penalized for not having a championship game, but that's perhaps for another thread . . . )
Assuming Oklahoma hangs on to beat Missouri, does LSU jump Georgia and supplant Kansas for the other spot in the championship game? They are, after all, undefeated in regulation, and the regular season and postseason champions of the widely conceded best conference.
Any chance Georgia or Hawaii makes it? Kansas? Georgia and Kansas did not win their conference or even their divisions within their conferences. Hawaii played a ridiculously easy schedule.
Who is in?

One thing I guess Georgia can say is that they didn't get their shot at beating LSU. I think LSU being #7 in the BCS coming into this weekends game can't jump a #4 Georgia. Kansas only has one loss but didn't really play anybody until Missouri, and lost.
I can't see a 2 loss Va Tech team passing Bulldogs either.
But of course its the BCS and you never know what is going to happen.
The human vote counts 2/3, I think, so I would side with Georgia.

This is rediculous. I can not justify a Georgia team, arguably the 4th best team in the SEC behind LSwho, Tenn and FL, getting into a national championship game. Whatever the decision, i can gaurentee it will be a crappy one (more deserving teams will be left out than the one team who gets in).
I mean why not Hawaii?

Because they played no one of note all season.
Imagine what their record would be had they played Georgia's schedule.

I'm not saying the Georgia is deserving, I'm just saying that with the computer numbers and the way the human voting usually just moves lower teams up after a loss, Georgia may be in.
Now whats ridiculous is Hawaii. I would love to see it though, because it would finally prove what a joke the BCS system is. But then again, we saw Appy State beat Michigan this year.

This is like a nightmare. Can you even imagine what this type of system would mean for any other sport at any level?
Personally I want OSU to get stomped on because they have slipped through this big crap hole that is the BCS without playing nearly as good of teams as anyone else in the national championship picture.
This is a nightmare. All in the name of the almighty $buck$. Too much money wrapped up in big bowl games to ever go to another system. I agree with Kirk Herb. when he said tonight that there will never be a playoff. It doesn't matter who the best team in the country is anymore.

I agree with something else just said on the telecast: poll voters should forget about their prior ballots, especially last week's ballots, and vote anew based on who they really think are the best teams right now.
They also need to stop using W/L records as such a controlling shorthand for where they rank teams. A team that loses to a more highly ranked team shouldn't necessarily plummet. A 10-2 team from one conference may well be much better than an 11-1 team from another conference; too many poll voters act ignorant about that.

I think the NFL should adopt this system. Just think New England goes 15-0 and gets beat the last week of the season, Dallas finishes about 14-2 but also loses the last week of the season. Nothing but 8-8 or so teams behind them and we end up with the Detroit Lions Vs. Tennessee Titans in the super bowl.

haha do my hometown Cleveland Browns have a chance?
Just kidding I am no where near a Browns fan, but wouldn't that be scary.

The BCS expert on ESPN said it would be Ohio State and LSU.

Couldn't agree with you more. But unfortunately this brings up two things. First what is the point of rankings anyways if the whole mess should be reassed "anew" after the season is over? Secondly, all the voters will never justify puting a 3 loss team ahead of a one loss team no matter what, which is truely a shame.
Ohio State out of the big ten only has one loss but you have to think that a GA or LSU team with two losses out of the SEC is a much better choice. A team like Hawaii will get consideration for the BCS just because they are undefeated. A team's record should not be held so high. Instead the conference a team plays in as well as the margins of victory for the games they did lose need to be considered.
With that said LSU needs to play for a national championship. The only two games they lost were in triple overtime and they are out of the best conference in the country.

Looks like Hawaii might not want to be in the conversation any longer. They are down 21-0. It is early though...

Yeah, but you could say that about OSU, too.
And what would any non-SEC teams record be if they played Georgia's schedule or any SEC schedule?
Ohio St lost to unranked team that is now ranked cuz they beat OSU. Kansas only lose was too a then and still ranked team.
Hawaii beat a ranked Boise St.
Heck, LSU two loses are to teams no longer ranked. Georgia's too.
Hawaii played the schedule they were dealt and won. They tried scheduling tougher competition but teams pulled out for various reasons. Some of that is Hawaii's fault for pushing too much for home games.
But I think Boise St proved just because you played a cupcake schedule doesn't mean you're a cupcake team.
College football is arbitrary. It based way too much on opinion. Nor is the BCS or any of the polls consistent. Mich loses to Ap St and falls out of the rankings. USC loses to Stanford but doesn't fall as far. OSU is suddenly immune to the 'lose late and you're out' rule.
College football is fun to watch, but it basically amounts to a bunch of exhibition games really.

I don't really know who should be in it BUT I know who shouldn't. If you can't win your conference you SHOULDN"T get to play for a National Title!!!

Kinda makes you wonder what would have happened had we taken care of business against South Carolina and Mississippi State and pulled out that game against UT last week.
If If's and But's were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry christmas.

Neither team is deserving but about a dozen teams could lay claim to it. LSU is the more deserving of all the teams by playing 7 teams who were ranked at the time of playing them. Here are the top contenders and how many ranked teams they've played.
OSU- 3 teams that were ranked 23-25 at the time. Mich was their big test.
LSU- 7 teams ranked top 20. Biggest test-Fla., UK, and Auburn in a row.
UGA-3 top 20,1 top 25. Biggest test Aub, UK back to back
Kan- 1 top 20. 1 20-25. Biggest test lost to Missouri. only top 20 they played
VT-4 top 20. 1 top 20-25. Biggest test got stomped by LSU 48-7
OKA-3 top 20. Biggest test Texas and Missouri back to back.
USC-3 top 20 and 1 top 20-25. Biggest test Cal and ASU back to back.
To me; LSU is the more deserving having played 7 top 20 ranked teams and by being ranked it is meant on how their opponents were playing at that time.
OSU is the least deserving having beat nobody. Their biggest game of the year was against a team that could not beat a division 2 team. Michigan played better after their 2 early season loses but really looked good against the Big Ten. Well so much for the Big Ten competition. UGA did not even win their division in the SEC. Right now LSU and OKA are the most deserving but OSU will play in by default. The NCAA needs to install a playoff system period.

Then I suppose you think that the 1996 Kentucky Wildcats don't deserve to be called National Champions, since one of their only two losses that season came in the SEC Championship Game against a Mississippi State team that went on to the Final Four? By your logic March Madness could end in a week.

You cannot compare basketball and football. FOOTBALL DOESN'T HAVE A TOURNAMENT! And while we didn't win the SEC Tournament, we went UNDEFEATED in the conference and won the regular season championship. There is absolutely no comparison between the two sports! When college football has a playoff, come back and we'll talk then.

My bet is that it'll be Ohio State vs. LSU. Georgia or USC could slide into that spot, but I think LSU gets it based on their win last night. They are, after all, the champions of BY FAR the strongest conference in America. (I loved that the two teams playing for that championship combined for seven OTs against Kentucky.)

Of course you can (and should) compare the two - in large part because one does have a tournament, which is exciting and leaves little doubt as to who should be the national champion, and the other doesn't. Why on earth would you not compare the two?
