Here's my short list of impressions:

Coach is fun. You can tell that he's a no non-sense type of guy. I don' think doing the call-in show irritates him, but some of the calls sure do. And who could blame him? But here's the catch: all they have to do is screen a little better and cut off bad calls. That would up the quality very much.

Coach likes to communicate that there is a common thread among every detail, and that is the whole work hard, play with passion, "play hard, play smart, play together" line. He's not going to give up a lot of the inside details.

Coach's interaction with the students was somewhat interesting. He gave a lot of the kids smart answers or remarks before the questions. I don't know if you all could hear these or not? To one boy who was wearing a toboggan, he said something to the effect of, "Did someone give you that, because I sure hope you didn't buy it..." Now, his tone communicated some playfulness, but the boy really didn't know what to say. I'd say he asks some of the players questions in the same manner: this is often demeaning. Now, there is a time for that, but not to a student during a call-in show like that. He asked some people why they came to UK, and they of course answered basketball! He made a little bit of a funny face to that. Note: Had he asked me that, I would have replied: "Well Coach, after you've been here a while, hopefully you won't have to ask that sort of question. Look to your right (where he would have looked at 7 NCAA's, etc..).

Coach has a humor. But he also thinks he has a humor. Nothing wrong with that at all, I like it in fact. But when you're just getting to know people, you sometimes ought to be careful with the jokes, and emphasis a playful tone

I still think we made the right hire. It will be rocky at times, but we will get there with continued hard work and dedication. And, hopefully, we will convert our Coach into a Kentucky boy. He did have an awfully weak handshake :icon_lol:

Matt, thanks for your report. FWIW, some of the calls irritate the heck out of me. :icon_lol:

He seems like a pretty cool guy. I have heard a couple of instances where he has kind of come off as condescending, but that's okay. I think he sees it as humor. He seems to have fun during the games too. I saw him smiling and laughing several times during the UNC game. Is this a good thing? I think so, toa point. YOu can see how much he loves the game. This year is all about improvement and getting to know this program and the great fans around it. I think it's just a huge shock to his system right now. The kid saying he came for basketball would not have happened at UK:widcat:

Well, a couple of points. People who said they came for basketball meant they came as dedicated fans. That's all.

And as for the game, I see some of that as his way of not going Bobby Knight on everybody. He looks like he's about to blow up to me. You get some of that during the call-in show. The, I can't say anything nice, so I'll just sit here with a mean grin deal. It's his way of getting through the molasses of some of those calls.

I meant that it would not have happened at A &M

Oh, ok. Everyone he asked said that :icon_biggrin:. Nothing wrong with that :icon_lol:

Matt, thanks for your report. FWIW, some of the calls irritate the heck out of me. :icon_lol: I agree it has been that way for at least 30 years in my experience

I don't understand why they don't screen the calls better or have it delayed some instead of live.

Also, Coach's little section at the beginning pretty much answers about any question that you could ask that he would be able to answer. And why people still ask recruiting info. when they know he can't answer kills me...

Maybe having it every two weeks would be better, I don't know :shrug1:

Good gosh, I'm glad you don't play for UK. Maybe the reason Legion left is because of sensitivity like this.

Overanalysis runs rampant on message boards, but gosh, get a sense of humor or just get over being a sourpuss.

Were you there? Obviously not. Yes it was a joke about the toboggan, but the boy didn't realize it at first. At any rate, this is simply my trying to rationalize some of the things have been going on.

I've made it perfectly clear that I really like our Coach, both on here and in public. Nothing that happened yesterday changed that opinion. But he's new to us and vice versa. All I said in that message was that when people are getting to know each other, it's easy to take things the wrong way. As far as the over analysis part, I guess you've never done that?

Re-read that post. I wasn't being a sourpuss nor have I been very often on here.

Now, back to the game (as Bob Knight would say)

:icon_question:. Matt Colvin is NOT a "sourpuss." He has been most supportive of our new coach and generally continues that in his report of the show, as I see it. He did share that the coach's humor was not immediately understood by the student--an observation, and he seemed careful to come back and make his support of Coach G clear, even saying that he personally LIKES the coach's humor.

I try to stay away from defending (and, thus, away from this basketball forum). Yet, I respond here, for I feel it is the right thing to do--and with no offense intended toward anyone. Matt has always seemed a positive poster to me. Even if he were not, the name-calling is troubling. Perhaps it was just a "bad hair" day from a most pleasant young man I have met, respect, and like. Again, :icon_question::icon_question::icon_question:

This board just isn't the same without you, poodoo. PLEASE, stick around!
