I am coming down from canada for my first uk and i am pretty excited. I was at a college football game a couple years ago (not uk) and they did not serve beer. Do they serve beer during wildcat games?

Unfortunately no. You can drink at several places within close walking distance though.

It is a conference rule that Rupp and Commonwealth do not sell alcohol during UK events. However, the way things are going it might be worth trying to sneak some in.

Before the game, the Hyatt sells anything you want to drink. I usually go down to the bottom of the "mall" area and the bar in the back sets up a counter outside and sells beer.

Thankfully, no.

Since we are in the Bible Belt, no we don't.

If you are staying in Lexington you can get it, but there are a lot of counties in KY that don't sell it, so no guarantee on any exits selling it either.

I recommend buying the little case of bottles of makers mark, which isnt too high, and sneaking them in. They each go well with a large coke at Rupp.

The SEC prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages at all sporting events.
However, a plastic flask works well...but you didn't hear that from me. :icon_mrgreen:

Wow, really? Even at football games? I would have never thought that.

I think the last UK football game I went to people had beer, but that was quite a few years ago. I can't remember seeing any in Rupp...

I know UofL has beer at PJ's Card Stadium.

Upper Arena is steep. Be careful coming down to use the restroom if you have emptied your flask and drank your ice already. Nothing ruins a good game like rolling down the stairs. Enjoy.

It used to be sold at C'wealth...there were probably many other factors regarding the change in policy but several years ago, some UK football players were involved in a drunk driving accident (leaving for a hunting trip on a Sunday, during the season) in which there was a fatality (maybe more than one, I can't recall) and, afterward, UK and the SEC thought it best to no longer sale alochol at their venues.

Nope, beer has never been sold at Commonwealth nor Rupp.
Southeastern Conference rules.

Of this I am certain.

That accident, along with another drinking incident that involved a train are what led UK to prohibit alcohol on campus. I think sporting events were already ruled out.

Excuse me for sounding prudish, but they also have a lot of obnoxious drunks at their games too:mad:.
There is nothing worse that sitting at a sporting event, trying to watch and enjoy what you paid your money for and having to put up with a drunk. Don't get me wrong; yes, I like a good drink too; tequila or long island iced tea is my preference; but not at sporting events. That's just me, I guess.:shrug1:

With tailgating involved in football, lets face it, there are drunks at any sporting event.

I agree. VERY annoying.

Unfortunately, I've noticed that whether or not a stadium serves alcohol doesn't seem to affect whether or not there are going to be annoying drunks sitting around me. I've had it happen at Rupp and Commonwealth. (Though, admittedly, not too often. But that's just because Kentucky fans are the classiest...:big_grin:)

There are a lot of drunks at Commonwealth too. They just get drunk in the parking lot or sneak it in. There was this really obnoxious 50-ish guy at the Fla Atl game who talked incessantly at an extremely loud volume, and kept making creepy inappropriate comments about the girls on the dance team along our endzone.

Then there were the UT fans sitting behind me last game that I swore had gotten hold of some special brownies, they kept giggling like little girls at things that were nowhere near funny....

It's not just at basketball or football for me. I attend several NHRA professional drag races each season. Raceway park at Indy never allowed alcohol to be brought in until a few years ago. Safety was the main reason that they did not allow it because the fans have so much access to the pits where the racers are. The first year that they allowed it was not a pretty sight. It took two years before they stopped it again. They do sell beer at the track now, which they did not do before, but it is pretty well controlled. If you get out of hand, you will find yourself being escorted off the property. It is becoming common-place at all of the tracks. That suits me just fine. After sitting at the track all day in the sun, I am ready for my alcohol after it is over:icon_mrgreen:

I wish they'd serve alcohol at Rupp, though. Maybe less people would act like they're at a funeral instead of a basketball game.:shrug1:

Through decades at Commonwealth, I have witnessed quite a few obnoxious drunks in Commonwealth Stadium. YET, honestly, I probably witnessed more in our ONE section in ONE visit to Papa John's Stadium. From our one section alone, person after person was escorted out during the course of the game. I have never seen and heard (screamed obscenities, about which the kind Louisville fans sitting next to us were most apologetic) anything like it. I have seen others post similarly here.

So, logically, selling alcoholic beverages at athletic events at least makes SOME difference. On the other hand, I, too, would love to see ROUDIER, more supportive UK fans in both Commonwealth and Rupp.:)

Technically you aren't even allowed to have alcohol in the parking lot at Commonwealth.

It is a STUPID rule by the SEC. Because of this insane rule, UK and all SEC schools are losing millions in revenue and the city and state are losing taxes too. Instead, the non prudish who enjoy to drink sneak it in and drink anyway. If rupp actually sold it, you could control it more than it is now.

INSANE RULE and one that loses lots of money all over!

well they are college games and most college students are under 21, and can't drink alcohol :icon_biggrin:

Yeah. I don't know how much debauchery it really prevents, either. When I went to the Davidson-UNC game at Charlotte Coliseum, beers were $6.50. I'd expect about that if UK sold alcohol at athletic events, too.

Imagine how much cash it'd take to go from "non-annoying sober" to "obnoxious drunk." I don't really think banning the alcohol significantly changes anything.

If the team doesn't start playing better, they might want to reconsider this policy!
