I had my wisdom teeth taken out about a week ago and apparentally I have formed dry socket. It...freaking...kills. It is literally the most painful thing that I have ever felt. It takes a lot to make me cry, but I am definately willing to admit that this has driven me to tears. I have literally not slept in fours days because of the pain except for last night. I take an ice pack to my face and got about and hour and a half of sleep. This is the worst thing ever!!

Gah...I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out on Jan. 2nd, and I'm hoping I don't get that. I've heard it's not the best feeling >.<

God have mercy on your soul, if you do.

If you haven't been back to the Dentist, do so right away. A dry socket can get infected and is very dangerous. I had 2 wisdom teeth cut out while in the Navy and came up with a dry socket. It became infectedd and I was in the Hospital for a week getting a penicillin shot every 4 hours. :icon_mad: :thumbdn: I also had a tube inserted inside my cheek for drainage and flushing with salt water. Not a picnic in any way. Don't try to be a tough guy and have it checked out.

And always remember not to do anything to cause a suction with your mouth (smoking, drinking from straw, spitting, etc.)
But do as the above poster said and go back to the dentist. They will pack the holes with this stuff, and it will make you wish you had went back earlier.

like a lot of guys, I think my dad is the toughest man that ever lived. . . . .I still remember when he had his wisdom teeth removed over 30 years ago and the hellish pain he went through with the dry socket that developed. . . he had 5-way heart by-pass 5 years ago and still says he had more pain with the dry socket than than the heart surgery. . . .by all means go back to your dentist.. . .

I had all of mine taken out and didnt have too many problems...did have one dry socket, but went back to the doc's and they took care of it (packed it up) made all the difference in the world. After that one time, never had another problem.

Although...during the surgery I woke up...I couldn't feel anything, but I could just hear what they were doing to my teeth they were taking out....hurts just thinking about it.

I had mine cut out 22 years ago. The most important thing is to rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse again with a salt water mixture for the first several days after surgery / extraction. I rinsed after every meal and snacks. Your dentist / oral surgeon can provide specifics. This is to ensure that debris doesn't become deposited within the cavity.

I had mine removed 12 years ago when I was 18. Had my jaw shaved at the same time. Had stitches from my canines on the bottom to the back of my teeth, up the back to the top then to the front. Don't remember how many stitches, something like 28 or so I think. I don't know if I had a dry socket or just got something up in it, but the dentist shoved the hook up into my gums and scraped until he popped the "puss sac" as he put it and extracted whatever was up there out. Most excruciating pain I have ever felt.
(And just as an added note of misery that I went through, I went out to go to the store on the day that I had them removed but didn't make it to the store, got pulled over and arrested for something stupid, and spent the night in jail, where they wouldn't let me have my pain meds)

I went back to the dentist today and if packed it with this clove stuff and gave me more vicodin. (YIPPEE!) Overall, my mouth feels MUCH better than before. He told me that "I must have a really high pain tolerance because I didn't go to the dentist right away" or something and said he's had 40 year old men in there bawling there eyes out from dry socket. I didn't mention that I had been at home on the couch crying, lol.

If it continues to hurt, go back and request some local anesthetic. When I had dry sockets, they gave me two large plastic syringes. They had a curved tip that made it easy to access the back portion of an open mouth.

One syringe was used to fill up with warm water and rinse the empty socket. The other was filled with a high powered anbesol for numbing the entire area.

The local anesthetic worked much better than the loritabs and other meds I tried. I could actually function and there was no pain at all.

I am glad you hear you went back. It is definitely the worst pain I had ever experienced.

Radiated....did you hear them doing what they do to your teeth?

To me that sound is stuck in my head and makes me cringe more than scratching a chalkboard.

I just remember him saying to give me more anesthesia.

I'm not afraid of the dentist, and she usually doesn't numb me when she has work to do. After she came back from her surgery she couldn't pull, so she held onto one tooth and I yanked my head to pull it out.

I woke up during mine too. I just remember seeing the doctor prying around and could feel the pressure, but no pain. I was so high it didn't bother me

I work for a group of dentists and oral surgeons. We get many, many people who have dry sockets, mostly caused by drinking through a straw and smoking. it is a vry painful thing, so do not put of going back to the dentist. You would not believe some of the things that we have pulled out of those sockets, like entire green beans, etc.

When I had mine removed (two seperate visits) I was awake for all of it. The only thing I didn't like was the craking sound when he was pulling the teeth out. I assume the cracking sound was from my teeth, but from the pain the following day it could have been my jaw bone. I'm glad they are gone.
