I want to get my wife an iPod for Christmas, and my question actually revolves around the computer from which we would download music.

I already have an actual iPod and iTunes up and running there, but let's just say that she and I have VASTLY different taste in music. She would likely want none of mine, and the feeling is mutual.

So, thinking as an old mainframe guy, is it possible to "partition" the computer somehow so that she has her own version of iTunes running in parallel to mine? Or my other thought was do I get some brand of player other than Apple so that the operating system is different and therefore there should be no confilct?

Thanks everyone - Merry Christmas!

If I'm not mistaken, you can turn off the automatic sync on the iPod and manually choose which song(s) you want to download. I believe you can also set up different music libraries. That way you can have your music and she can have hers.

If you´re using XP, the easiest thing to do is to let her have her own profile. That way, when she connects her iPod, she logs in as herself, and she only syncs her music library.

Thanks Brian. We are using XP and in fact she, Jason and I all have our own profiles. If this works, this is great! Thanks again!

Brian is right it does work, I got my girlfriend an iPod for her birthday and when she logs onto the computer under her user account her own iTunes is there to open.
