Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.

His death was announced Sunday in a statement by Anna Loynes of the Solters & Digney public relations agency, and was also posted on the singer's Web site.

"Dan left us this morning at 6:00 a.m. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," it read. "His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him."

Fogelberg discovered he had advanced prostate cancer in 2004. In a statement then, he thanked fans for their support: "It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years. ... I thank you from the very depths of my heart."

Fogelberg's music was powerful in its simplicity. He didn't rely on the volume of his voice to convey his emotions; instead, they came through in the soft, tender delivery and his poignant lyrics. Songs like "Same Old Lang Syne" — in which a man reminisces after meeting an old girlfriend by chance during the holidays — became classics not only because of his performance, but for the engaging storyline, as well.

Fogelberg's heydey was in the 1970s and early 80s, when he scored several platinum and multiplatinum records fueled by such hits as "The Power of Gold" and "Leader of the Band," a touching tribute he wrote to his father, a bandleader. Fogelberg put out his first album in 1972.

Remember his Derby song?

Run For The Roses
By Dan Fogelberg
Produced by Dan Fogelberg and Marty Lewis

Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of Western Kentucky
On wobbly knees
With momma beside you
To help you along
You'll soon be-a-growing up strong

Oh, the long lazy mornings
In pastures of green
The sun on your withers
The wind in your mane
Could never prepare you
For what lies ahead
The Run for the Roses, so red

(chorus)

And it's Run for the Roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined in the dance
It's high time you joined in the dance

From sire to sire
It's born in the blood
The fire of a mare
And the strength of a stud
It's breeding and it's training
And it's something unknown
That drives you and carries you home

(chorus)

(bridge)

(end)

That's a great song, SRB. I used to love it when they played it during Derby week and now that I'm living out of state, it brings back some memories.

I have to admit, I've been somewhat of a closet fan of Fogelberg for years. His music is a little too soft for me to listen to an entire CD but with the ability to burn personalized CD's, I love to throw 1-2 on one for road trips.

I am very sorry to hear about his death, especially at such a young age.
I always loved 'Part Of The Plan' and 'Run For The Roses'.

Wow, Sad news. I saw Dan in a small concert at Louisville's Bellermine College's gym. It was in the late seventies when his Souvenirs and Captured Angel albums were going strong.

I saw this in the paper yesterday. :( I believe Dan lived in Colorado at one time and I think he used to record at Caribou Ranch which has since closed.

About a decade ago, I attended the memorial service of legendary track coach, Bud Winter. His family created a beautiful service in his honor. One of the featured songs in the program, was Leader of the Band.Fogelburg's voice was amplified throughout the church, there were no dry eyes.

I found it shocking that not so many years later, Dan F. would leave this world.Too soon, too soon.

I loved the "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" album...the Poobah and I even had one of his tunes in our wedding. IIRC he used to live in Nederland, CO. I remember buying a t shirt at the local liquor store.

Dan's gone to the next world much too soon...

He's known better for his sappy songs, but I liked his harder stuff. "Power of Gold" and a number of other songs on that same album.

Sorry to be posting on this so late but I heard this when out to eat with my wife. It was truly sad news to me. He had a lot of music that I loved back in the day. Power of Gold was great. Many many more.
