View Full Version : Small update on Scotty Hopson

Today's local paper had an article in which Scotty H's mother stated that
Tennessee and Louisville were "leading" in recruiting Scotty. Something or another about head coach Gillispie had not talked to Scotty and that bothered the family..."only coach Cyprien".
Well....could be different reasons. Scotty had already said he was going to MState when Gillispie had come on the scene. Could be that UK is kind of hesitant right now because this seems to have some similarities to the recent Legion debacle.
Doesn't look promising right now for fans that want Scotty to wear UK blue. BUT:

Seems like Alex Legion all over again with a controlling mother not letting her son grow and decide his own way in life.

that's ridiculous. How does it sound like his mother is controlling him? There are a ton of parents who speak to the media because they don't want their sons to be bothered by them. Also, the parents should be a big part of where their kid goes to school. Did you just tell your mom/dad one day what your future plans were going to be and see ya later? I doubt it.

Seems more like a Lofton all over again to me. End up at a rival and torching us. I would like to see him at UK. We need all the top level talent we can get to become contenders again.

I saw it when she said that Mississippi State was the choice and Hopson said it wasn't just yet. Don't let your wanting of a quality player cloud your judgement and not see a problem here.

we dont need Scotty Hes a one year or two years and done. We need a four year player. Another Alex because Scotty Mom controll this i wish their mom would stay out of their son business let them decide and go to school. I see Miss State, Tennessee, and Louisville i hate to see this guy end up like Chris Lofton but i think he will not choose KY

Which paper? Do you have a link? I'd love to read the article.

Surprises me that Gillispie hadn't been talking to him; he unofficially visited Lexington early in the semester and Gillispie hosted him on the trip.

Also, I posted an article on here a while back in which Scotty was quoted as saying he has turned his recruitment over to his mother.

The paper is the Hopkinsville New Era. Sorry, I'm pretty illiterate on computer usage...don't have an idea how to post a link.

Wonder why Gillispie doesn't give Hopson more attention. Lookslikeif he gets involved directly we may have a shot.
I want talent and lots of it. Then, we can run and dominate - true UK basketball

Maybe because hes realizing you get the best players available.....for the position you need. Guards arent really what we need for the next 2 years

I would disagree. Bradley and Crawford are graduating, and Legion has transferred. Next season, we'll have Jasper and Meeks, both who have been/are recently injured, and Porter, who hasn't yet shown the ability to be a consistent player. Miller we probably play SF, and it's unclear where Liggins will end up. I think we can use talent everywhere on the floor.

This whole Hopson situation reminds me of this girl who used to flirt with me in school, she now has six kids and FOUR ex-husbands, story being she couldnt make her mind up and be committed either, I say we walk from this kid-give me someone who knows what they want-no more momma's the kid is old enough to know where he fits and what he wants, and from all previous information given he want to run and do His thing! Talented or not,I promise you this kid would NEVER be happy playing for Coach G and UK, he will always second guess any decision he/ momma makes.

1) BG said when he got here that he wanted the best players available and he would coach to the team he had, well as of now Hopson is far and away the best player available.
2) Don't kid yourself, we need scorers, I don't care if he stays one year we need him and it would be foolish not to pursue.
3) I am shocked if BG is not in touch with this kid, I find that hard to believe.
4) I agree that parents should be involved in his decision, this is a life choice it can severely alter his future. And guess what, part of BG's job is to put up with parents so that's a weak excuse to use to not go after a kid.
5) In the end, if BG is backing off this kid due to a perceived attitude problem or he just doesn't think it's a good fit then that's his decision and I'll support it. At this point however I would say we need to do everything we can to get him to sign, especially after losing Legion. I think he'll end up at UL or UT though.

I'm only replying with my opinions and some rumors, so take it for what it's
worth:
!) I'm not sure if CBG is looking for big scorers or players that he can coach and will fit his system. Dominate personality coaches usually don't
mesh well with Alpha personality players.
2) Kentucky never showed a lot of early interest...don't know the reason,
couldn't guess...and that is a major burr in every family member's saddle.
3) Low frequency rumor that Billy G has some personal meetings with the
Mississippi State staff and is hesitant to tread on toes.
4) I doubt this staff can handle any more headaches, whether with
players wanting to be prima donna or family members or former AAU
coaches.
5) All indications are the favorite school for Scotty Hopson is ANYONE BUT
KENTUCKY.
having said all that, he could quite well sign with Kentucky in the Spring.

I heard from people who went to the KOB that he's a huge head case, and that's probably why BG is not much into him. Probably also why Pitino loves him so much -- shady characters seem to be the way Ricky P is going these days.
We don't want this kid - Rashad Carruth all over again!

I hope for Hopsons case that this is not so. By the way, what's Carruth doing these days? Pumping gas, working at a shoe store? Whatever it is he knows what he's doing, dog!

He just wants to get to the league as soon as possible, like any person with a brain would do nowadays I should add. He wants a school with alot of scouts and TV coverage. Thats a partial quote if I remember correctly from scout or rivals, cant remember. These kids are not what they once were.
CashMoney >>>>>Tradition/Education/4 years.
There are a slim few of there kind left, there endangered even. "It's hard out here for a pimp" I have a slue of friends that have the same mindset. Can't blame them for trying to get a better life as fast as possible. The 1 year rule was great for College Basketball. I hope anyways. I also hope that 2 Pat stays at least 2 years,I love this kid and feel bad at the same time for him.

You truly believe this rule is great? So know we have guys coming to campuses across the country for more or less a training camp for the NBA. I personally liked it better when they could go straight from HS. If the kid has that much talent, so be it but now we have guys 1 and done and this leaves holes in many rosters across the country.
Not to mention the fact, what happens if they get injured and it is career ending?

I used to feel sorry for some of these guys. Gave up on that.
The players know the drill. There is an opportunity for a degree from a
University.....or a chance behind door number 2.
The coaches know the risk they take. Pitino got out-done with the Telfair deal and didn't try to recruit Rondo. OOOOOOPS. You tell these kids they are the backbone of your system and the greatest thing since sliced bread while you recruit em, then spend the next couple of years wondering why
they are uncoachable.
Injuries are there, no mistake....it's something all athletes face.
Personally, I would like the NBA to follow the NFL protocol and not draft
any kid that isn't done with his third season.

The NFL does that more for safety than anything. There's no kid in America coming straight out of high school that is physical enough for the NFL. It's takes years of serious weight training and game experience to become prepared for the select few. Basketball doesn't run into that problem because in this sport you're not trying to physically harm others and in some cases high schoolers are talented enough to play with the big boys.

Great point. I think the NBA could benefit from the maturity standpoint if nothing else. Usually a world of difference between a senior in HS and a
junior in college in the way they think and react.

I totally agree with this. Most kids lack the maturity to move to the NBA and flourish. There are some rare cases (Lebron for instance) that are ready, but most are not. Speaking of not ready for the NBA - what happened to that Morris kid?
