View Full Version : Could we come up with a nickname for this team?

It seems quite a number of the UK basketball teams have nicknames: Fiddlin' Five, Rupp's Runts, Unforgettables, Unbelievables, Comeback Cats. The only UK football nickname that I know of is the Thin Thirty.
I've often thought that this team should have a nametag in which they will be even more fondly remembered. What say you? Could we come up with a name that will make this team more affectionately remembered? I know you can come up with others, but here is what I thought of: THE FACTORS (During the preseason CRB often predicted that this team would be a factor in the SEC race. THE OVERCOMERS (Think about how they overcame; probation, injuries and ridicule of their coach). Another partial one would be: The _________Seniors, I just can't come up with an adjective for the seniors.

Ideas?

How about "The Architects", they built our program into what it is today. Or "The Survivors", or the "LoyalCats"

In keeping with the Architects theme:

THE FOUNDATION

The basketball "Fiddling Five" reference conjures up thoughts of this Masters of the Music City Bowl bunch. They could be called the "Music Masters" for short.

copying a post I made on another board here...

Because they Believed when nobody else did.

Because they saw something special when nobody else did.

Because they gave their all, when nobody else would.

Because they fought despite the odds.

Because they had faith when hope was lost...

I want to give a huge shout out to this special class of seniors. They inspired us on and off the field in a multitude of ways.

We have been the benefactors of their vision, dedication, faith, passion, blood, sweat, and tears.

They are to the University of Kentucky football what the "Unforgetables" were to UK basketball. They are a select few. Who have given their all and turned around a proud program and made the name on the front of their jerseys more important than the names on the back.

They should go on the ring of honor at commonwealth stadium and Jerry Claiborne Field.

Thank you! What you have done. The odds you have overcome will not be forgotten.

I Personally believe instead of retiring individual numbers for this class they should just put up a big 2007, heck put it on the 25 yard line.

In keeping with the Architects theme:

THE FOUNDATION

I like the FOUNDATION name, but we won't know for a few years yet whether it applies or not.

But for starters: THE RESCUERS. They pulled us from the depths and may indeed become known as the foundation if our program proceeds as we believe it will with another 5 years under Brooks.

THE BELIEVERS.....

If we heard Tom Leach talking 20 years from now about "The Believers" I think we'd all know what team(s) he was talking about.

Kinda goes well with the Christian faith a number of these guys profess too.

I don't think it's fair to our great teams of the 50's or 70's to say that this team laid any sort of foundation,

the one and only nickname I've heard so far that makes any sense, especially based on words from the players themselves, is :
THE BELIEVERS.

I say put up a sign in Commonwealth and with it the years 2004-2007.

How about "Those guys that saved my liver?"

No, I love "The Believers." It fits. They helped to change the culture of UK football.

Just beautiful, cobbycobb.

Too, my nickname for this team is the Unforgettable Believers. Yes, their main trait was BELIEVING. Also, though, they will NEVER be forgotten. For me, both must thus be included in any nickname for this special group.

Not only will this team never be forgotten by me (and so many thousands of fans), but also I know there will NEVER be a team that I love more. That's because it's impossible to love an athletic team more than I love this team. It really is.

I'm still trying to think of an adjective for the seniors. A large part of my love for this team is because of the so special seniors. I honestly cannot think of an adjective "good enough" for them. That pretty much says it, doesn't it!

Maybe the "Inspirational Seniors" is a start. Yet, it doesn't begin to encompass the adversity they overcame; the character they exhibited; their unselfishness and love for their coaches, their teammates, and us fans; or the feelings of love they instilled in UK fans' hearts. As a group, they are certainly my "Most Loved Seniors" ever. They really are. :icon_cry: :)

Actually, I think this thread is somewaht of a moot point because, as many have noted, tis team has already been named -- The Believers. Nothing we can come up with will ever dislodge that name.

And, that name is so fitting. yes, on the one hand, they were believers in that they beleived they could win and that they beleived they could go to bowls and accomplish things that had not been accomplished around here for quite a while. But, they were also beleivers 4 and 5 years ago when they first committed to the University Kentucky. They beleived back then when many others could not even dream.

Come up with a nickname for this team -- already been done.
