Every team needs a great midrange shooter. This is a lost art, being thrown away for the glory of making a three point shot. Ron Mercer was UK's last great midrange shooter. If he had a shot anywhere from 10 to 18 feet it was money. He also had the three in his arsenal, but I loved the fact that if he was open anywhere, he would knock down the shot. The fact that there was so much talent at Kentucky, during his playing days, kept him from leading the nation in scoring. I know UK needs rebounding help, but I would like to see the Cats get a great midrange shooter.

I liked Mercer alot but always thought Anderson had more talent. We will never know as injuries hurt both players. UK could use either talent.
Goose Givens comes to mind with the best mid range jumper I have seen in UK Blue.

You know who else was a great mid-range shooter? Ed Davender. A lot of folks don't remember that, but a lot of his points came from that area. He was also a very good rebounding guard. Always liked Ed's play. He is one of my favorites.

Davender could play some ball. He is very under rated.

Yeah, and I bet Alex Legion could've been the next one if he would've stuck around. It's really too bad. I think he's missed out on something special at UK. I think it would've been good for him. Oh well, I hope he finds what he's looking for.

Another lost art is the bounce pass. We wouldn't have so many TOs if the guys would just throw a bounce pass. I just hardly see it any more and it's a shame. It's almost as if coaches today don't stress it as it would cut down on the TOs IMO:icon_idea:

His Momma, the prophet, should already know what he's looking for. Shouldn't she?

Ed is easily one of my top 5 favorite players to play at KY. He was playing when I first started to be old enough to understand the game.
I'll never forget when he shot his free throws and he would blow air out of his mouth and his cheeks would blow out. Not sure why I remember that but as a kid I always got a laugh out of it.

Kyle Macy would do something similar. His routine was bend over, wipe his hands on his socks, take a deep breath then exhale before shooting the free throw. His reasoning was he didn't want to affect the aim of the shot by inhaling or exhaling during the release.

Ed also took too long to shot FTs. I believe the Alabama game of his freshman year they called one of his Fts off because of this? Anyone remember this?

The mid-range jumper is definitely a lost art, as evidenced by the USA's last few Olympic teams. The American game is glamorized by above-the-rim play at the expense of pure fundamentals. Does anyone even practice jump shots from inside the arc anymore?
