I said I wasn’t going to do this, but it has been a slow day, so …

Here is a bit if a breakdown on the top 250 recruits.

By my quick count, 45 schools are represented on the list, with 33 players still uncommitted. Kentucky and Vandy are the only SEC schools not on the list.

Of the 217 committed recruits, 138 of them, considerably more than half, are committed to just 12 schools. Of those 12 schools, 4 of them are in the SEC – UGA (12), Alabama (11), Florida (10) and LSU (9). USC, UCLA, Ohio State, Michigan and Texas each have 11. Miami and Oklahoma have 12 and notre dame has an astounding 17. However, most of the 33 uncommitted players list at least some of these dozen schools, so their numbers are likely to swell.

Now then, if you think Kentucky has a reason to be worried, consider this. Tennessee had only 1 (rated #149) and Auburn had only 1. That has to make those fans really nervous. Arkansas had 2 and So Carolina, Miss St and Ole Miss had one each to round out the SEC.

Some schools did very well, considering their lack of recent success. As mentioned, Miami had 12, but even lowly Pitt had 6. FSU may be suffering a bit from their recent decline as they picked up “only” 8.

Other “powers,” both traditional and neo, did not fare very well, either. Clemson, Va Tech and Penn State had only 4, while Boston College managed just 3. Nebraska, Oregon, Mizzoo and Oregon had but one each. Georgia Tech, Kansas, Oregon State, Purdue and UofL were not represented at all.

Since it's a slow day would you mind breaking it down a little further in listing those kids that are going to a college in their home state. I believe you mentioned on another thread that there are no kids on that list from Kentucky or am I mistaken? I believe that's the biggest hurdle for UK to overcome. As long as we keep winning and going to bowls we will start to get on the lists from out of state kids.

Excellent point, RV.

No, it is not THAT slow of a day ... but you are right. For example, as memory serves me -- and this may not be 100% accurate -- but it seemed to me that some schools such as Pitt, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington managed to get some kids from their home states. That MIGHT hav ealso been the case with South carolina, Miss St and Ole Miss. Without the home state kids, those schools would have had much lower numbers, or, in the case of some them, not be mentioned at all. So, if Kentucky had produced 3 or 4 of the top 250, then it is likely that UK and/or UofL would have been on the list as well.

Maybe I will have time to check it out further. I'll see.

OK, i did not bother to research the big boys, but of the schools with relatively low numbers, here is the breakdown of instate/vs total.

Clemson 3/4
Nebraska 1/1
Mizzoo 1/1
Pitt 6/6
Va Tech 3/4
Washington 2/3
NC State 1/2
Auburn 0/1
Texas A&M 5/5
Arizona State 2/5
Illinois 1/3
Arkansas 2/2
Minnesota 1/2
Ole Miss 1/1
So Carolina 1/1
Arizona 0/1
OK State 1/1
Tennessee 1/1
Miss State 1/1
Maryland 1/2
Rutgers 1/1
Wisconsin 1/1
Oregon 0/1
Virginia 0/1

So, your point is well-taken. Without home-grown talent, another 12 teams drop off the radar completely. Now, what I have NOT checked, and i swear, i am not going to check, it to see if any states produced talent where NONE of them stayed in state.

Auburn 0/1

That's interesting that the state of Alabama had no players listed in the top 250. I would not have thought that to be the case.

No, no. That is not what my numbers are showing. In the case of Auburn, they have only 1 recruit from the top 250 and he is NOT from Alabama. The Unioversity of Alabama has I think 10 or 12 of the top 250, and many of them are from Alabama.

The second number by each school shows how many they have of the top 250. The first number indicates how many of THEIR top 250 recruits are in-state. So, with Pitt, for example, they have 6 of the top 250 and all 6 are from Pennsylvania. That is NOT to say there are only 6 top 250 recruits from Pennsylvania. It ONLY says that all of Pitt's top 250 are from PA.

Going long these same lines I know that it is easier to be rated in the top 250 or for that matter 750 (3 star and above) if you are a skill player so here's something I want to share. According to Scout we have three O-linemen on our commit list that are 3 star.

What that means is they are all rated in the top 750 players in the nation. Breaking that down a little farther there are less than 50 high school O-linemen that are rated 4 and 5 star. If there are a like percentage in comparison in the 3 star group then that would equal 150 players. All this means is that three of our Olinemen (Ulinski, Burden and Woods) are among the top 150 O-linemen in the country and Smith is not that far behind. Folks that's something to hang our hats on.

Rivals ranks them individually with

Ulinski being #46 in the nation at OT
Burden #29 in the nation at G
Woods #48 in the nation at G and
Smith #63 in the nation at G

The trenches are where games are won and lost and this bodes very well for our future.
