View Full Version : Would Gillispie want a center?

Just asking for opinions:
Coach G's style of play seems to lend itself to players that don't fit what most of us see as a center. Wondering if he could be looking for more of a 6'8 or so player that is aggressive on the boards but runs all night and
a man-on defensive player.
Who is left on the recruiting trail that would fit that mold?

For some reason, we keep thinking "Rick Pitino" instead of Billy Gillispie. His style is a defensive, physical, knock your block off type of basketball. Run and gun he ain't. Yeah - I'd say he wants a center. EVERYbody want's one that's big, quick and mobile - so he's certainly no different there.
At least, in my opinion, he had better want a center.

I think coach Gillispie wants a more mobile type player to play the post as evidenced by him not playing some of our big post players. I can't read his mind but it just seems too evident that he now doesn't have the type of player he needs to run his "system".

Are two different things. Based on the first six plus months of recruiting with Coach G. I see him wanting a center but not settling for a center. He will only take a center when that center fits his style and has the athletic ability he wants.

I agree. I think he's being choosy on this one. Which is good. We don't need anymore projects.
It depends on what you want to call a center. I think he wants an athletic big guy, but who doesn't. I think right now he is more concerned about raising the overall talent and athleticism than he is about specific positions. If he could get a DeAndre Jordan type I am sure he would do it in a heartbeat but I don't think he will just take anyone over 6'9" just to have a big guy. We have those guys and they don't play so we don't need any more. We need impact big men not bodies. I think the next two years you are going to see a bunch of really athletic 6'3"-6'8" really athletic guys recruited. Once he has a bunch of those guys I think he starts going after more specific targets.

I think he just wants talent. Whether that comes in the form of a 7'2" center or 6'8" PF, he just wants skill.

That's understandable. You know all white people look the same..........;)

I totally agree. Big, quick and mobile are the keys. Just because a player is 7'0" or taller doesn't mean he's a good bb player. Like you say, he had better want one because I don't think we'll ever be a serious contender for a NC w/o a quality true center.
