North Cobb quarterback Matt Roark has decided to play college football in the SEC for Kentucky.

“I looked at Kentucky and it was a perfect fit for me offensively with what I can see myself doing,” said Roark, who committed late Tuesday. “I was looking for a place that I’ll have a shot at quarterback or receiver.

“They want me to come in and see if I like quarterback. If not, I’ll play receiver. Hopefully, I’ll play as a freshman. But it’s too early to really know.”

Ray Gover, Roark’s father, played football for Kentucky. But Roark claims he wasn’t persuaded by his dad to commit to the Wildcats.

“He totally left it up to me,” Roark said. “He told me good stuff and bad stuff about that school. He wanted me to make my own decision.”

Matt Roark committed to Kentucky Wednesday night over scholarship offers from Duke, Illinois, Oregon, and Wake Forest, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports. The Wildcats are expected to give Roark an opportunity to make it under center.

He said, "I just wanted a chance to play quarterback. I'm not sure that's where I'll end up, but I want to go somewhere I can figure it out. I felt like Kentucky was the offense that fit me best. I've always liked the basketball team, and once, I got to know more about the school and met the coaches I knew it was the place for me."

Want some good football news? Well we found out today that Matt Roark, a QB/WR combo out of Georgia has committed to the Cats over Oregon and Illinois. Roark is a kid that will have an impact in college and the Cat coaches have told him he will get some snaps under center. He chose the Cats over Duke, who he considered because of academics, but said he came to Lexington because he loved the coaches for the Wildcats. This is another in a long line of great pickups made by this staff in the last few weeks, continuing the recruiting momentum in a way that truly has to make all UK football fans proud.

Just a little something I came across.

Roark’s position coach, former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin, is convinced that Roark can play wide receiver or quarterback at the Division 1 level.

Matt is good enough to play quarterback,” said Martin, in his first season as North Cobb’s quarterbacks coach. “Now that he’s accepted the position, he’s gotten a lot better. He’s more cerebral. He knows where he’s going with the football and he’s scary when he gets out of the pocket because he’s a great runner and a great passer as well.”

Roark, who is 6 feet, 5 inches, is known as a running quarterback, and he has rushed for 755 yards on 125 carries (6.0 ypc) and seven touchdowns. But his passing has been excellent, too. He’s 52-for-77 passing (67.5 PCT) for 859 yards and nine touchdowns.

Roark credits Martin, the quarterback on Tennessee’s 1998 national championship team, with helping him with his mechanics. The two began working together last spring.
