On the eve of national football signing day, University of Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe woke up to a pleasant surprise.
The Cardinals received a last-minute commitment yesterday from Dublin (Ohio) High School's Zach Stoudt, who is listed by Scout.com as the nation's No. 25 quarterback.
I think I shocked them," Stoudt told The Courier-Journal last night. "I don't think they thought I would commit since I just visited three days before signing day. But I thought a lot about it, and it's the place for me."
Stoudt, whose father, Cliff, played quarterback for 13 years in the NFL, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers, gives U of L's class a boost in the national rankings.
The Cardinals went from No. 62 to No. 57 in Rivals.com national rankings. U of L is also ranked No. 57 by Scout.com.
Stoudt, who became a starter this season after suffering injuries his junior year, threw for more than 3,600 yards and led his team to a 13-1 record. He committed to Pittsburgh but said he had second thoughts after the Panthers took two other quarterbacks (including former U of L commit Tino Sunseri).
"The situation with Pitt never really sat well with me," Stoudt said. "I was never really over the fact they told me I would be the only QB going into this class, and then two days after I committed they accepted two other guys.
"(With Louisville) I like the town and I like the place. It was always one of my top schools, and I really like Coach Kragthorpe and Coach (Jeff) Brohm."
