Looking for help from those who know Lexington (and you all seem to!). Bunch of teachers/principals from Madison, WI looking for a Spring Break Golf vacation. Could you please offer any suggestions about...

golf courses (we're thinking Old Silo, Peninsula Golf Resort, Cherryblossom--all come with good reviews, any others?),
Lexington area lodging/bars close to campus (we'd love to hang out with local Wildcat fans!)Anything else you have to bring us to Lexington instead of Lake of the Ozarks, MO.

Thanks

It takes a while for Peninsula to get in playing shape. I think they have Bermuda grass fairways, so I would probably not recommend it for spring golf. Otherwise it is a beast of a golf course. If you are doing the regional thing, Cherry Blossom, Old Silo are great golf courses. I would personally add Kearney Hills Links and Houston Oaks to the list. In fact I would make them a priority. They just held US women's amatuers at Kearney last summer, and the course is a true links course. It is a Pete Dye course, and it is a bear. Depending on how many courses you intend to play, I would rank them in this order: 1. Houston Oaks(Paris KY 20 minutes outside Lex and they have GPS). 2. Old Silo (which is about an hour from Lex) 3. Kearney Hills 4.Cherry Blossom.

If you stay downtown in the Hyatt or Radisson you will experience all that downtown Lex has to offer. For fine dining go to Murrays, for homecooking hit Ramseys (save room for pie), and for pizza go to Joe Balogna's.

I'd agree with the golf courses. Also, if you don't mind a bit of driving, there are state park courses not too far from Lexington that I'm told are simply amazing, considering they're operated by the state of Kentucky.

As far as Pizza, Joe B's is really quite overrated. Actually, it hasn't been good in a long time. The only thing that makes it a "landmark" is that it's in an old church. It really isn't anything special. The breadsticks are good, though. I'll give them that.

For pizza, try Pazzo's or Brooklyn Pizza, or if you're awake late at night, Goodfella's pizza on N Mill St.

I too have heard good reports from the new state park courses but they are quite a haul from Lex. Houston Oaks is the track that I play the most, and it is a slam dunk. It is also very close to downtown Lexington.

We will have to agree to disagree on Joe Bs. I am partial to the fried zuchinni (sp), the fried peppers, and the thin crust pizza. Pazzos and the Mello Mushroom also have fine offerings.

Old Silo and Kearney Hill definitely. From there, I'd probably play the University Club.

Definitely play Kearney Hill if you can. It's a municipal course, but is in tremendous shape considering. Actually, all of Lexington's city-maintained courses are above average considering they're public courses. They're affordable, too. I play Tates Creek and Lakeside the most. All the LFUCG courses can be played for under $30, with the exception I think being Kearney Hills. I believe it's green fees are $31?

The city of Lexington has a great parks system...probably as good of a parks system as I've seen in a city of its size. Pretty much anywhere you live, you're within walking distance to a park. You're picking a nice city to visit.
