Henry County junior Jamal Patterson picked up scholarship offers from Florida and Kentucky earlier today.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver was offered by Wake Forest on Saturday during junior day activities in Winston-Salem, N.C.

He already had offers from Army, Clemson, Indiana, Purdue, Stanford and Troy.

“Things are looking good right now,” Patterson said Monday evening. “A lot of coaches have been coming in and getting a copy of my highlight tape and a copy of my transcript from my counselor.”

If it is in fact in Kentucky and not Georgia (which I'm thinking there is a Henry County Georgia because I can't see a reason why the biggest newspaper in Atlanta would print it otherwise.)

Henry County, Kentucky. It's about a 35-40 minute drive on Interstate 71, Northeast of downtown Louisville. It's a very rural, farming type county. Henry County High School is located in the county seat, New Castle.
Some of you might remember a young man named Tim Harris, who was the state's leading rusher. Tim played at Henry County and went on to play an uneventful but full four years at UK during the Bill Curry era.

The county is very small and normally doesn't field very competitive teams. I'm not sure but it might be a two-A school. (The way they screw around with the class alignments it's hard to keep up.)

Anyway, that's a short synopsis on Henry County.

Hope that helps.

Where is Henry County?

Just south of Atlanta on Interstate 75.

because it is indeed in Georgia.

Here's a link to a Georgia prep athletic site that gives some info on the school. Not much on Patterson, but it looks like his team kicked some butt this season. They only lost two games.

Actually I was hoping it was Henry County, Kentucky as I'm Class of 75 and former Voice of the Wildcats (no disrespect to Cawood). :icon_biggrin:

No kiddin? I'm Oldham County class of 75 and I worked for years at the radio station in Eminence. I used to do the coaches radio show on Saturday mornings and I called many a HC game for radio in my time.

You've got me beat, then. I never did radio. But I did the public address for men's and women's basketball including tourneys (HCIT, 30th District, 8th Region) my last couple of years. Still have family in Campbellsburg.

Well, my point is, I guess, is that as much attention as this kid seems to be getting, if he is not a Kentucky kid he is going to be tough to land.

While your probably right, there used to be a good correlation between the school who first showed an interest in a player and who he signed with.

Given that we are on of three who offered early we may be in a better position that those who come along later.

I might be wrong, but I think one of the biggest recruiting hurdles to overcome is if the state university has a top notch team (such as UF, UT, UGa. etc.). I think most kids will attend the state university especially if it has a good team and offers the player, even if they get in late in the recruiting process.

Henry County (KY) is in fact in Class 3A. They are in District 4 with Western Hills, North Oldham, and Spencer County. This according to the Cats' Pause 2007 Football yearbook.

Things have changed. I remember in the 1980s they were in with (I think; partial list) Owen, Trimble and Carroll counties, and Eminence - all Class A at the time IIRC. They had the nicest stadium of the lot, complete with nice scoreboards done up well and the most thorough PA game calling in the stadium, down to which players were coming on and off the field.

I called several games on radio for Eminence in the late 80's and early 90's. Their football teams were pretty much forgettable until Stever Frommeyer took over as head football coach and AD. I haven't kept up with them in recent years but back then they were always in the top two or three schools for their size and enrollment.

I am from Shelby County which neighbors Henry County and when I first read this it was hard to believe and I was about to do some investigating. I'm not sure if any or many great d1 athletes have come out of Henry County. I could be mistaken but I think Jared Carter's daddy is from Henry County. Could be wrong

Jared did indeed go to Kindergarten in Campbellsburg Elementary School. (Henry County). I think they moved after that year.

At the time (early 1980s) Eminence wasn't so great but Henry County was good and Carroll County was very good.

When I was in high school, they were in our district.

Class A, Region 2, District II -- it was:

1. Garrard County (my alma mater)
2. Harrodsburg
3. Frankfort
4. Lexington Catholic
5. Owen County
6. Carroll County
7. Henry County

My senior year, I think we dropped Owen and got Paris. Either way, in the mid 90s, when I was playing, this might have been the most competitive district in Class A. Though the bottom three rarely were very good, and Frankfort was going through a down period, us, Harrodsburg, and Lexington Catholic were ALWAYS top ten teams, and usually at least two of us were top five. This was before Catholic got its "football legs" and really took off, though.

I know this, the battles between us and Harrodsburg were EPIC.
