Growing up in the eastern Kentucky town of Paintsville, John Pelphrey developed a passion for the University of Kentucky basketball program, like most boys who grow up rooting for and dreaming of one day playing for the Wildcats.

Pelphrey, who helped Paintsville High School to three consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearances, enjoyed a solid career for his beloved Wildcats, helping restore the luster to the storied program from the NCAA sanctions handed down from rules violations. He was part of “The Unforgettables,” which reached the Elite Eight in the 1992 NCAA Tournament before losing to Duke, 104-103 in what is considered by many one of the greatest college games of all time.

Pelphrey returns to Rupp Arena, but he’ll be on the opposing side n this time as head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. The two teams meet at 2 p.m. Saturday and Pelphrey realizes who most fans will be pulling for despite being one of their own.

“I’d be very surprised if they don’t go with the Cats,” Pelphrey said when asked if he expected people in Paintsville to pull for Kentucky or Arkansas.
