$750K to leave ($500K by an anonymous donor) and he agreed not to sue for wrongful termination...

Looks like they're calling the players' bluff. I hope whatever IU does they don't lose all the steam they have built up over the past few years. It's nice having good competition from our traditional rivals.

Nice job Kelvin, you had one of the best college basketball coaching jobs given to you, you turned them back into a legit, relevant program, had top recruits signed up, had the IU fan base loving you, and the IU admin saying "we finally got this right"...then you go and do something so incredibly stupid that I still can't believe it happened...have fun coaching in the NBDL you moron.

Well put!
It's hard to imagine an adult who knowingly violated NCAA rules, and then lied about it to the NCAA and his employer. And, the hard part for me to understand is why IU gave him $750,000 to get out of town.

is doing what it needs to do in this situation. There is no other recourse. I think the IU faithful should be glad that Dan Dakich is ready to take the reins. I hope that he is given full opportunity to seek the permanent head coach position.
He is of the RMK school of basketball, and while he was a role player for the Hoosiers, he turned in one of the most stellar defensive efforts I have had the pleasure of seeing. He was slow, flat-footed, and somewhat pot-bellied. Knight put him on Michael Jordan in the NCAA tourney and Dakitch held the wunderkind to just 12 points. Absolutely amazing. I think he would make a hard-nosed coach and I think he fully understands the right way to run things, just like his teacher.

To avoid having the IU name dragged through court and spending a million dollars in lawyer fees. Sad, but true. :icon_rolleyes: :shrug1:

I think the AD oughta go too I mean he did endorse Sampson after the same problems at OU and the subsequent violations (and $250k payout) happened under his watch.

From what I've read the AD is almost assuredly gone as well. They had to settle up with one turd before they get to the other. He said the other day he was a realist.

It sounds like IU had protected themselves and did everything right in their formal contract with Sampson. The clause that allowed them to terminate him immediately without pay due to cause would seem to have covered this situation. The motto here is that when it comes to formal contracts it doesn't matter whether you CAN do something legally if you're afraid of being sued you're going to pay no matter what. It's a life lesson, but it stinks. It looks like rewarding a liar and cheater. :shrug1:
He may have gotten away from IU in pretty good shape, but I really hope the NCAA will ban him from coaching. If they can prove that he knowingly lied I don't see how then can't ban him after his OK and IU charges. :icon_confused:

A stupid amount of money to pay a cheater.....please go away and don't come out of your hole for a while.
IU got slapped in the face over this and while I personally love it, it's unfortunate for all their fans and students.

although, he had to cheat in order to bring IU back... so it's not like he did all that great stuff, and then cheated. he had to cheat to "bring them up" in the first place

On 12/07/1974 in Bloomington IU gave us a real aspen kicking (98-74)...during the game Coach Knight slapped our Coach Hall in the head during a sideline dispute and from that moment on the IU game has been a Newport street fight to me...let's rock...on 03/22/1975 my sweetest revenge happened in Dayton, Ohio in the Mideast Regional final: KENTUCKY 92 INDIANA 90
That said, it's surreal to think IU hired Kelvin Sampson in the first place...a Wildcat fan's damp dream
I do feel sorry for the IU fans like us who just root for their team.

IU is enjoying the fruits of his illegal recruiting. The settlement is peanuts compared to the three million the ex- Ohio State coach got through the courts. He sent much more money to a German recruit mother than was allegedly sent to Mill's dad. And it led to Kentucky Shame. What justice!
IU is smart to settle on Sampson's way out- immediately.

That's the problem though, I think he could have done it without cheating. It's one thing if he were handing out cash to recruits, but under the circumstances I think he could have got the job done playing by the rules, may have taken a year or two longer, but he's still a great coach, much better than Mike Davis.
