I've done a 180 on the Wii. At first, I thought it was a dumb idea for a system, but after playing with my nephew's, I went out and got one for myself and I love it.
Super Mario Galaxy is amazing. I've not played any Mario games since the NES versions and I am amazed at how fun this game is. It literally took me back to my childhood of playing Super Mario Brothers on the NES. I really can't say enough good things about this game.
Super Swing Golf is loads of fun too, as it Wii Sports. Who knew that game consoles still came with games these days?
One of the other cool things about the Wii... kids games. My daughter *loves* the Disney Princess game we bought for her.

:thumbup: Super Mario Galaxy is really one of the best video games I've played...ever. SO much fun. And, like you say, it takes you back to our (I'm assuming we're close to the same age...30-ish?) youth. The "realistic" games are fun, but I much prefer the game-ishness of games like this.
I've got Super Swing Golf, too, but haven't played it enough yet to make a call either way.

Super Mario Galaxy may be the best video game I've ever played as well.
I've heard a lot of gamers say the Wii is "dumb." My wife used to teach high school, and we asked a few of her students about it before we bought one. Nearly every one said they thought it "sucked."
The reason for this, probably, is that the Wii doesn't have a lot of Halo-esque games that hardcore gamers are playing. Which, for me personally, is a good thing. I don't like first person shooters at all, and really don't care much for video games in general. But I love the Wii, and my son (who's 4) goes crazy over it. We've been playing a lot of Mario Pary 8, which we bought him for his birthday.

Exactly. When video games started to become like animated movies, I quit playing them altogether. Which is a strange thing, because I love narrative and I love film. But the way these games are written (they're written for 14-year-old boys, essentially), and with how tough they are to learn (it can take you days to just learn the controls and moves), I just don't have the time or the patience for them.
Give me something that I can learn to play in 3 minutes, like the original Nintendo games.

Yep.
Speaking of, one reason I wanted a Wii so bad is I heard that there's a place to go and "download" the classic Nintendo games onto the system and play them. Has anybody tried that yet? (I've never had a video game console "hooked up" to the internet, so I'm virtually clueless...)
I'd LOVE to play some of those games again. The original Legend of Zelda. Excitebike. Kid Icarus. Contra. Mega Man. Bionic Commando. Ahhhhhh... :icon_biggrin:

You didn't just say Kid Icarus! I thought I was the only one on the planet who knew about that game.
What about Ninja Gaiden, TecmoBowl, Kung Fu, Mach Rider, Bases Loaded, RBI Baseball, 10 Yard Fight, 1942, Bad Dudes, Double Dragon... Remember when the original Nintendo came with a robot that held a controller?
I also had a Turbo Grafx 16. Bonk's Big Adventure was the premier title on that one.

You're bringing tears to my eyes, Will Lavender. Happiest birthday ever: I turned twelve. I got Bases Loaded Baseball and Super Marion Brothers 2. Video game heaven for about two straight months after, I tell ya.
Golgo 13, RC Pro-Am, Shadowgate...Man, this could go on all day.
What about Baseball Stars? Remember that one? That's the first one I remember that actually had salaries. Raised the bar.
I love my Nintendo Wii. I don't play it nearly enough as I should, but it is a ton of fun. I agree that Super Mario Galaxy is a great game. It's the perfect system for getting a group of people together to play.
Littlemeyer, the Virtual Console is AMAZING! I've only gotten 3 games for it (Excite Bike, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World), and I would go broke if I got all the games that I really wanted for it.
All you need is a wireless router hooked up to your internet and you will be able to access the virtual console.

How much does a game cost? Are "Nintendo" games the only ones you can get, or can you also get, say, "Capcom" games, or other makers?

I just hooked my Wii up to the Internet over the weekend. I'd had it for about a month, before I realized it was Internet ready out of the box - unlike my XBox 360 where I had to pay $100 for a wireless adaptor.
Anyway, the original NES games are mostly $5 each. The SNES games are $7 or $8 and the N64 games are $10 each. The 24Connect feature is pretty neat too. Basically, your Wii is still connected to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Network even when your system is powered down. So, it constantly downloads news and weather updates and you can have it download game demos while you sleep... it's a really neat little feature.
And you're right, I am 30-ish. (31 to be exact) So those original NES games are right in my wheelhouse. I most loved all the different baseball games - RBI Baseball, Baseball Simulator 1.000 and especially Baseball Stars! They have Baseball Stars 2 (which I don't remember playing) for download, but not the original. They also have Punchout!! (minus Mike Tyson, but otherwise the same game as Mike Tyson's Punchout, which I loved), Kid Icarus (anyone remember the Saturday morning Nintendo cartoon show that had Kid Icarus on it?), RC Pro-Am, Castlevania and a ton of other cool orignal games.
I don't know if there's any third-party published stuff on there (like Bionic Comando and Contra - both of which are available for download on the 360) but there is so many great Nintendo titles, I'll be happy with them for a long time.

I got a Wii in September. It's fun, but I play my Xbox 360 a lot more since my favorite games are sports sims. (Though when the whether warms up and I'm in a golfing mood, I'll probably wear out Tiger Woods '08). I haven't found that many games for the Wii that I like yet, but then again, I haven't rented any to try them out. I've heard good things about Mario Galaxy and Mario and Sonic at the Olympics.
I like the Wii, especially Wii sports. The system isn't for me though, I'm more of a shooter/sports person. I consider myself a gamer, not hardcore, but a gamer.
My dad told me a story about him and my mother. My father was over my G-Ma's house playing Techmo bowl when my mom said she could beat him. Never played before, she beats him, and to this day he's never lived it down.

I used to think the Wii was stupid, until my manager bought one for the break room at work. It is soooo fun :icon_biggrin:. We just have Wii Sports but we have a lot fun playing and creating Mii characters.

Now, that's pretty cool. What kind of place do you work at?

Home Depot.
I think the plan is to get all the stores in our district into a Wii Sports tournament to create some inter-store cooperation.
Should be fun.
