Was sitting here and listening to some Aerosmith and got to thinking about how they were the first band I ever saw in concert...just wandered what some of your guys/gals first was too....should be interesting.

I was in 7th grade and "Get a Grip" was Aerosmiths big album at the time (1993-1994). Friends of my family were going to the concert, it was in Rupp and they offered to take me along and man did I have a blast.

It is still to date the best concert I have ever been to. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I was only about 13 or 14 and I was sitting next to a couple of ladies in their 20's with little more than a cut up t-shirt and jeans:icon_redface::icon_mrgreen:...but it is still my favorite concert.:thumbup:

If I go way back, the earliest concert I can remember included Merle Haggard - 1971 or `72? Seems it was at the Convention Center / Louisville Gardens. I was about 8 or 9 and evidently the folks couldn't get a sitter, so we got to tag along. :icon_biggrin:

Let's see, not counting Bobby Sherman when I was 12 :icon_redface:, my next was B.J. Thomas, which a friend coerced me into going to. The first I remember choosing to go to with enthusiasm included ZZ Topp, Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Santana. I don't remember who else took the stage that night but it was a great, and a little wild, outdoor concert in Memorial Stadium in Austin. My friend and I sat on the astroturf right in front of the stage because there was nowhere else to sit.

My very first was a rock 'n roll all-star review around 1958-59 at the Kentucky State Fair. A few of the acts that I remember were Fats Domino, Little Richard, and the Everly Brothers. Legends now, but just popular rockers back then.

Scroll forward six or seven years and I saw James Brown in Lexington. My buddy and I were two of only a handful of white faces in the crowd, but it was one of the best nights of music I've ever experienced. In his prime, "the hardest working man in show business" was unmatched.

Then around 1965-66 I saw the Righteous Brothers at Memorial Coliseum. Prior to the concert, I was practicing chipping and putting at Tates Creek country club when the pro (Humzey Yessin, for those who might have known him) asked me to take a couple guys around the course. Turns out the couple of guys were none other than.....yep, them. And they were two of the nicest guys imaginable.

Other than a free State Fair 'Three Dog Night' show mt first real concert was Janis Joplin and Big Brother.

In 1973 I saw Lynard Skynard at the Nashville Speedway. Ted Nugent opened up then Johhny and Edger Winter played second. Finally Synard came out and blew us all away. I saw some things at that show I had NEVER seen before. Topless girls, strange herds being smoked, a ten person brawl, a bonfire started in the crowd. It was kind of the last hurrah of the 60's IMO. I will never forget them playing Freebird with 12000 people holding up lighters in the Nashville night.

My very first concert was the Osmonds  back in 1971 or 1972, at the Fairgrounds. I really don't remember the exact year. Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods opened up for them. One of the youth leaders in my church took me and my sisters and her two nieces.
The next one was a Toys for Tots concert in Freedom Hall about 1975. Charlie Daniels was supposed to be the headliner but had to cancel because of a scheduling conflict. There was a bunch of terrific local bands and some solo performers who ended up being one hit wonders. (They must have been because I don't remember their names now. :icon_mrgreen: )

Bands I've Seen

Godsmack, Metallica, Huey Lewis and the News, Steve Vai, Puddle Mudd, Saliva, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Sevendust, Three Doors Down, 311, Slightly Stoopid, American Hi-Fi, The Wailers, Matisyahu

I absolutley love going to concerts but they are a sore subject right now because I am unable to attend 311 day (March 11th) this year. They put on a 6 hour concert. :icon_frown:

In January 2008, Weiland has recently stated that a Stone Temple Pilots reunion should be expected "in the coming months."[5] Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash confirmed the reunion by telling Billboard.com on January 25, 2008 that STP will be playing shows this summer.[6]

All this is contingent on him staying out of rehab of course.

Sorry, I should have clarified a bit. I was just having a bit of fun with some of the names of the bands you mentioned and how they have "evolved" since I was in high school in the 70's. I honestly did get some funny looks from my parents and other adults when I told them what music I liked to listen to. I was just wondering what my dad would think of the music of today if he was still alive to hear it.

Honestly, except for Huey Lewis and the News which I liked pretty well, I don't have a clue as to what kind of music any of those acts you mentioned plays, and of the Stone Temple Pilots, and I only know about those guys because a guy that sat next to me when I was working in electronics used to listen to them all the time. I can't say I ever got to where I liked them, but I did manage to reach a point of tolerance. (I just turned 51, so factor that in.)

I hope I didn't come across as belittling your taste in music. That wasn't my intent.

A few minutes later, the MTV Unplugged set came down from the roof. Just an awesome show and I have goose bumps just typing this thinking back about that night. WOW is all I can say about it!

I think my first concert was either DC Talk or Michael W. Smith. Then got suckered into Brain McKnight and Boyz II Men. Once I was able to drive myself on roadtrips I saw The Who, Robert Plant, Pearl Jam, Phish, Tom Petty, Phil Lesh, The Allman Brothers, Rusted Root, The Derek Trucks Band, Neil Young, and others.

Starz, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Bob Seger during his Live Bullet tour in 1977 at Rupp. I agree with Rick that Molly Hatchet puts on a great show. Saw them 4 times. 3 with their first lead singer and once with the other singer who took his place when he was out for a while when he became a diabetic. They both are very good. I also agree that Rush is great in concert. I saw them several times as well. Lots of great shows. Lots of wild wild times. Saw The Who at Rupp when it was their first performance after the tragedy in Cincinnati. Saw the Stones..well I was there.

They are one of my favorites as well. I saw them at Louisville Gardens in I believe 98. Probably the best concert I've been to. They played a solid 1.5 hrs and left the stage. A few minutes later, the MTV Unplugged set came down from the roof. Just an awesome show and I have goose bumps just typing this thinking back about that night. WOW is all I can say about it!
I just found out that they will be in Indy for Carb Day! I'm giddy as a school girl!

1979, KISS, the original line-up wearing full make-up, at the late Market Square Arena in Indianapolis and The Kinks/John Cougar (as he was known then) shortly thereafter at the now long-gone UC Field House...quite the intro to rock and roll!Saw the Kinks show too. Small world!!
