I recently found this photo on the net. Does anyone have a idea who isin the Kentuckybasketball jersey #43 on the left side of the photo. I am guessing this photo is from the early70s and the player is football player Darryl Bishop, who played a few basketball games while at UK.

Wow, nice find. I may be way off, but that doesn't look like Bishop to me-seems rather skinny for a football player(even in the those days). Looking at Jon Scott's site, only three #43's are listed: Brown Sharp in '51-'52, Jason Lathrem in '95-'96, Jared Carter this year. Seems like this may be a freshman or JV game. If that guy's arm wasn't in the way, we could see who the opponent is which would definitely help!
Interesting photo. I'm not sure who this is or what game it is either. It looks like it's from the late 60's/early 70's. It's definitely not a varsity game because none of the players look familiar (except maybe Stan Key's face is seen in the background, maybe not)
Looking at the lettering of the opponent's jersey, this may be some sort of freshman blue-white game, as it is conceivable the other team's name is "Kentucky" also.
FWIW, Darryl Bishop was actually UK's first black basketball player as he was on the 1969-70 freshman team. He didn't go out for varsity the following year because he wanted to concentrate on football but he did later walk-on for the basketball team (along with another black football player Elmore Stephens) at a time when UK had severe manpower issues.
None of this adds up to me looking at this photo. I'd be very interested if anyone knows who these people are an what this game was.

A couple of things about this picture.
It appears to be in Memorial Coliseum as you can sort of see the balcony over the endzone in the upper right part of the picture. However, UK is wearing their blue uniforms which would indicate that it's an away game. If that's true, I'm not at all sure about the arena. Of course, UK did wear their blue uniforms sometimes during the UKIT Tournament, so this could be a UKIT game.
I'm having trouble making out if there a people in the upper level or the balcony over the endzone. If not, then this may be a freshman game. If this is a freshman game, then UK often used walk-on players when they only had 3 or 4 scholarship freshmen.
The more I look at the jersey of #44 in the white, the more it looks like Kentucky. Could this be a blue/white game in Memorial Coliseum with #43 being Tom Payne, #44 being Elmore Stephens (a football player walk-on), #40 in the background being Darryl Bishop (a football player walk-on). The guy fighting #44 for the ball looks like Randy Noll to me (later transferred to Marshall)
We need some other "oldies" to chime in here and give their take on this picture.

While I'm not so familiar with the balcony, I think the lights give it away as being in Memorial Coliseum. As I said, I think the fact that "Kentucky" is in blue is more the fact that this is a blue-white game, rather than a real game.

If that player is Randy Noll, he would have been a freshman in 1968-69 which is consistent if the other player who's head you see is Stan Key. Who the black players are I don't know.Bishop wasn't a freshman until 1969-70 season I believe. Payne wasn't either, and regardless Payne was much too tallto be any of the players in this photo.

I agree. We need some help on this. I mentioned that Bishop was the first black UK basketball player because I knew he was on the freshman team and ASSUMED that there were no others. But this photo may turn this idea on its head.

Good work. Jon Scott's sites lists Kirk Chiles(his back isto#44)as wearing #31 & he played in the era of the above mentioned players. Believe you may be correct on your theory, Wildcat Larry.

I have to say I do not think #43 is Tom Payne. #43 just does not like like he is the tallest player in the photo. The player behind him is as tall or even taller than he is. Tom Payne is suppose to be 7'1". But angles can sometimes fool you.
Tom Payne in the one year he played for University Of Kentucky as a sophomore in the 1970-71 season wore #54. If I remember right Tom was ineligible to play basketball for the 1969-70 UofK freshmen team. Tom played his freshmen year for a local AAU team sponsored by Jerry's Restaurant. The Jerry's team was consisted of mostly ex-UofK basketball players. But if this photo is from blue/white game, eligibility mightnot be a issue.

Jon Not Darryl Bishop he never wore knee pads and he was much more muscular..
I emailed Stan Key and he believes this game wasthe Kentucky East-West All Star
game in Memorial Coliseum in the summer of 1968. Some of the players he thought were in the picture besides himselfincluded#43 as Granville Bunton form Louisville Male, #44as Jerry Dunn from Glasgow, on extreme right Randy Noll from Covington Catholic and the other player in dark uniform with a number beginning with 3 might be Tommy Martin, who later played at East Tennessee State.
As I said earlier, none of this really added up in terms of this being a true University of Kentucky game. (although it certainly looks like they may have borrowed their uniforms !)
