VCU just lost to William & Mary (gack!). That means two bids for CAA (C'mon George Mason!) and that somebody's (Syracuse, Ohio State...) bubble just got burst!

Agree I think we are fairly safe for a little while yet.

Might be VCUs bubble that burst... Thier RPI was mid 40s before this bad loss. And, they haven't beaten anyone who will be in the tourney all year as near as I can tell.

That's what I was thinking, Mr. Peanut. Losing in their conference semi-finals might just VCU into the NIT.

Yes, you are right. UK is securely in the big dance.

I dunno. VCU (RPI 45 before loss) is 4-3 vs Top 100 RPI, 8-2 in last 10 games and now 12-6 in road/neutral games.

Syracuse (RPI 46) is 8-10 vs Top 100, 5-5 in last 10, and 5-7 road/neutal.

Ohio St (RPI 53 pre-Mich St) is 6-10 vs Top 100, 5-5 in last 10 (including today's win), and 5-9 road/neutral.

Plus, VCU won the regular season title, which does count for something in the CAA.

I think VCU is in.

Gee....isn't this a great time of the year????

VCU definetly won't be feeling too comfortable this time next week. They are firmly on the bubble,IMO.

Unfortunately for VCU, they won't be dancing. Andy Glockner had them in his "work left to do" category on the Bubble Watch on ESPN.com, and Lunardi had them as a 13 seed before this loss. Their three "quality wins" are against Houston, Maryland and Akron, none of whom will likely be in the tournament. Add to that bad losses against Hampton (141), James Madison (218), Old Dominion (133) and William & Mary (147), and there's no way they make it.

I also think all of those things mentioned in the previous post tarnish Anthony Grant's star a little bit. He was a hot commodity after last season, but he didn't strike while the iron was hot. I don't think he's quite as hot now as after last season.

After this loss, I think VCU is out. If they want to be considered for an at-large, they need to play a real schedule.

While I agree that this loss puts them out of the tourney, I think they've played as "real" a schedule as they could. They played Houston, Miami FL, and Arkansas in a neutral site tourney, played Maryland on a neutral site, and traveled to Bradley (a perrenial tourney team).

Similar to WKU, its pretty tough to get a home-and-home agreement with a high-major conference team, so you either have to seek out invitations to neutral site pre-season tourneys or give up home games.

You know, for a mid-major, that's not a bad schedule. And it must be tough to get BCS teams to play you.

Gary Parish of ESPN says "no Top 50 wins and four losses outside the Top 100 are two things worth noting -- I'm afraid what seems destined to be Grant's final season at VCU will end either in the NIT or that other second-rate event that's starting this season (it's called the CBI or something, right?).
