Each Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak. But, all of Bubba's neighbors were Catholic.... and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Friday.

The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.

The Priest came to visit Bubba, and suggested that he become a Catholic.

After several classes and much study, Bubba attended Mass... and as the priest sprinkled Holy Water over him, he said, 'You were born a Baptist, and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic.'

Bubba's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood.

The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors, and, as he rushed into Bubba's yard, clutching a Rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.

There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of Holy Water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat and chanted:

'You wuz born a deer, you wuz raised a deer, but now you a catfish.'

Hilarious!

And don't tell God or my priest, but I eat meat most every Friday. :icon_redface:

I put that one in our Knights of Columbus newsletter a few years back.

Speaking of eating meat on Friday, our priest recounted a vacation weekend he took during Lent.
He was sitting in a Bob Evans on a Friday morning enjoying breakfast. He overheard the waitress ask the lady at a nearby table if she would like bacon, sausage or ham with her pancakes.
She replied, "Oh, no. It's Friday, I can't."
At that he looked down at the country ham he was enjoying while he himself had forgotten. :icon_lol:

As he was sans collar, he fortunately received queries regarding his choice.

I thought the prohibition on Catholics eating meat on Fridays was lifted years ago? Growing up, I envied the Catholic kids who lived across the street because they got pizza every Friday night. I would have gladly traded in meat for that.

It was, except during Lent.

Cheese pizza or cheese pizza with veggies wouldn't have cut it with me as a kid. Pizza had to have pepperoni and sausage. :icon_surprised:

We provide cheese pizza as an alternative to our fish during our Fish Fry.

Which, BTW, our council is hosting our last Fish Fry this Friday at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Mt. Washington. Buttermilk battered fish, potato wedges, cole slaw, bread, pies cakes, etc.

If only Mt. Washington was a little closer to Monroe City...

Observance of Lent doesn't REQUIRE one to eat fish. Merely avoiding meat will suffice - and just one day a week at that. :icon_idea:

Had you only known. :icon_lol:
