View Full Version : I need to rant...
The university I have loved for all my 18 years is starting to annoy me. I'm currently deciding on colleges, and UK has done nothing but dissappoint. I'm waiting on scholarship offers and they are completely uninterested and useless. I have a full ride to Louisville that I need to accept or decline, but UK is my first choice and they won't send the letters. UofL sent letters out before March 1st, like the said they would. UK is screwing around.
For the last 2 months, I've called UK numerous times about classes, majors, general questions, and whatever else one might expect to question while deciding on a college. I have NEVER once talked with an admissions or financial aid counselor, just answering machines, and ZERO callbacks. A counselor at UofL calls me each week to see how I'm doing and just to check in. For years, UK had the upper hand on UofL in the education department, but over the last 5-10 years, the balance is shifting.
The UNC game this year made me desire a 4 year experiene as a Cat. The crowd was crazy, Rupp was alive, the campus was electric, and I had the time of my life. I've always loved the Cats and the prospect of attending games for 4 years is unmatched by any other. I honestly don't know if Princeton or Cornell could lure me away(which they won't...) from college basketball at UK. Pres. Todd came to my high school earlier this year and completely blew us off. We had 85 people from last year's graduating class go to UK, which is a huge contribution from one high school. He was supposed to give a 1.5 hour talk to the seniors. He was 45 minutes late and spoke for 6 MINUTES.
It's becoming apparent that at UK, you're a number and not a student. They know that they will have 25,000 students no matter what and don't care about individuals. They're causing me huge problems at UofL, I can't register for orientation to schedule classes which is gonna prevent me from taking what I want and I have a pending lease for an apartment that I might lose soon if I don't committ, but I can't do anything while UK sits and does absolutely nothing.
I know this has nothing to do with basketball, but I know students are on here and I'm hoping maybe some administrators or professors that can get things moving along.

For your own good, remember that a college education is about a lot of things. Having the opportunity to see your favorite team play regularly should rank pretty low among those things. Go where you'll be appreciated and challenged.

So have you already applied for admission and for financial aid?
Yes...I've been accepted but UK won't give any information about scholarships, and everytime I call there isn't one person at the whole univesity who can answer any of my questions.

From what I understand, you need a 28 on your ACT to be able to get any kind of academic ride. I'm pretty sure there are scholarships for financial hardship and the like. What I would suggest is the next time you are in Lexington, (I don't know how far away you live or how frequently you are in Lexington) go down to Funkhouser and make them answer your questions face to face.
This may or may not be helpful to you as well:

Showing up in person, as a follow up to a phonecall, and or letter, seems like a strong idea.
If you were my kid, and I have four who are college grads-- or in college now, I would say ," go where you are being recruited " as long as you think the education is equivalent.
You can always go to UK to grad school, providing you've applied yourself and achieved at U of L. Then you can enjoy CATfandom, and maybe UK will figure out how to give you a grant for your graduate work.
Good luck and congratulations on being motivated and hardworking. And if you actually have admission to Princeton, why not become a Tiger for awhile?

I am currently on the William C. Parker scholarship you might want to check it out, I am not to sure what ethnicity you are but it is mainly for minority students, tell them you have a little Indian in your blood if you don't fit the minority category. Its worth a shot, if it works you go to school or free if not all they can tell you is no

You can go to a different school and still root for UK. :icon_mrgreen:
It also needs to be said that UofL's academic standards are a whole lot lower than UK's. I don't know your situation, but just because a scholarship has been offered at UofL doesn't doesn't mean that it should be -- or will be -- offered at UK.
It is disappointing that you can't get a straight answer on the telephone. However, having worked around colleges for years, I can say that a lot of times offices are staffed with students who don't know much, who are on work study and are keeping one eye on their textbooks as they talk to you. As others have said, I would take a drive down there and talk to someone in charge.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'm with you 110%!!!! UK is nothing short of a pain in rear. When I first came here, they accepted me into sports management and then decided out of the blue to cancel it. They didn't tell me and when I came for orientation they had me in Kiniesiology which is to be a P.E teacher and they said there's no difference. No difference except I've gone from being the next George Steinbrenner to the next Richard Simmons. Then they wouldn't let me transfer to the business school since I didnt start there. On top of that, they are charging me out of state tuition when I can see the state from the top of my house. I've done everything they asked of me to get it as well. I got the KY job, housing, car license and plate, pay the taxes, and I even took a whole year off from college just to meet their bs standards and they still won't give it to me. They let cincy students in as well as other out of state students from other areas that are farther away than I am. I sold all of my families farm in KY to come here because that place wasn't a "primary" residence.
Now they're jacking up tuition while laying off advisors at gatton in favor of college students for cutting costs. Lee Todd blows too much money. And he absolutely refuses to try to get an earn and learn program like UL has with UPS where you get everything paid for in exchange for work. He could, he whines and whines to the legislature about not getting all of his state funds, he could work with businesses here and even push to acquire some. I even said I would be more than willing to help and he still doesn't care.
Not to mention the university tried to fire me because I didn't support some of their programs but couldn't because the ACLU stopped them.
I let my UK Alumni membership expire last month and at this point I just want to get my degree and get away from here. It's not worth it anymore.

Now that's a rant!
You sold your family's farm to attend UK? That's unbelievable. What kind of difference are you talking about in tuition? 5K or so a year? That seems to be an incredible sacrifice. I think you could write to a legislator and get that taken care of. If you could prove that they are charging Cincinnati residents in-state tuition, then you have a case against the university here assuming that "out-of-state" literally means out of state in their policies regarding tuition. Could be that they twist their language around a little. If so, UK is not the only university that does that.
And the UPS program is not necessarily a "you get everything paid for in exchange for work" thing. It's not that simple. I've taught in that program here in Louisville in years past, and it's an interesting concept but far from flawless. There are complaints every single day about how the thing is run.
Good luck to you. I think I would have given up on UK long, long ago if I were in your situation. Certain schools don't work for everyone.

Yea I have emailed all of the 15 senators and state reps about UK and why I felt they didn't need the extra state funding and my proposals and one of them actually forwarded it to Todd but thats as far as it went. They have the right to allow certain areas as instate and others out of state but I just feel thats a bunch of bull especially since the vast majority of the other universities accept Indiana and IU accepts the vast majority of KY.
Regarding the UPS UL deal, I would definitely like to learn more about it. Neither the UL or UPS website seems to go into great detail about it. I would like to hear from you and others about exactly how it works and the pros and cons about it so that I can present a better plan to UK (not that it will probably matter). Thanks for your luck as well!

We spent last Friday and Saturday at UK for Merit weekend getting my daughter registered for classes for the fall. As part of the process, they told us that scholarship letters are going out over the next two weeks.
We had a wonderful experience this weekend, met with advisors and some profs from Arts and Sciences and got her into the classes she wanted and ready for the fall.
My daughter has emailed admissions several times and always had quick replies.
Go Cats.

Go to Western Kentucky. Smaller campus and walking up and down the hill to get to Cherry Hall keeps you in shape.

I participated in Merit Weekend a while back, and it was quite advantageous to me. It is definitely worth the time and effort .

By the time I finished my Bachelor's at UK, I hated anyone and everything about the school except for my major's department.
By the time I finished my MBA, I even hated them.
Now, I look back with a whole lot of love and affection for everything about my school.
Always frustrating, never ending, but although the processes were usually broken, when a person stood up and showed he was a real person, people always responded. UK taught me a lot not least of which was how to go after what you want and not back down till you get it.

There are certainly a lot of things that could potentially sour you on your college experience. One thing I can personally think of is having every class in the leaky, creaky, asbestos ridden, be careful those stairs don't cave in on you Reynolds Building while watching brand spanking new parking garages and basketball practice facilities be erected all around you.
But I wouldn't change a minute, and in fact I would probably go back if I had the chance.

There's a lot of damn good profs and admin folks at UK. I'd recommend paying a face-to-face visit before giving up on them, especially if they're your dream school. You'll be looking at that diploma hanging on your wall for the rest of your life, so make sure you go somewhere you'll be proud of for the rest of your life. I loved my years at UK and remember them fondly. That was a while back, though, and things can change. Before you give up on them, though, I think you owe it to yourself to go visit the folks in admissions and tell them how you've been treated. If you don't get satisfaction at that point, that will be a pretty good sign.

Yeah, I chose UK for just that reason. And the other reason was the "check here if you want to attend UK" postcard they sent me. :icon_redface:
Everyone else had paperwork and applications to complete. :tongue3:
