Tim Callishaw (and I probably spelled that wrong) made one of the smart
alek comments that all four of the guys on Around the Horn like to make,
but there is some truth in it.

People want a playoff in football with the top 8 teams, but nobody can
seem to agree on a tourney with 65 teams invited.

He was right. No matter how many teams we get into the tourney, and Dickie V said the same thing on ESPN on Sunday, that even if we expand to 128 teams, people will complain about team #129 and #130 that didn't make it in.

The difference is they complain who doesn't get in versus who should have been in the NC game which is what the tournament is really about for these coaches/players. In the tourney, you earn it. In football, you are sometimes found at the mercy of pollsters.

Yep, and that's a big difference.

The "controversy", if it can even be called that, in college basketball deals with teams with VERY mediocre records, awful losses, a handful of decent wins...etc.

In college football, often it has to be explained to a team with one loss why they weren't good enough to play for the championship.

It's easy to tell Arizona State why they can't get in. Can you imagine trying to tell Kansas, North Carolina, Memphis, and UCLA that only two of you get to play for the championship?

If everybody agreed there would be no sports talk. This whats makes it fun because everybody can point out statistics or a loss to make their case. I wish Thursday would just get here.

March Madness is one of the greatest sporting events in the Nation. But there will still be people complaining about who got in against who should of gotten in. This is the FAIREST way of doing things. Teams have to play against the best to be the best in the Tourney unlike in the BCS.

Hell, let's just let everyone in the tournament. Free carrot sticks and juice boxes after the game!!

They might as well let my High School Intramural team into the Tourney if they do that.

If the NCAA tournament was just about including all the teams with a legitimate chance to win the championship as folks want the football playoff to be, 65 teams is way more than enough.

Yeah, and they would put them up against dUKe in a tough first round game for the ages!!

Good idea! And, while we're at it, lets stop keeping score. That way, we won't damage the losers self images.

With an 8-team NCAA football playoff, of course there would be grousing about who is 8, 9, and 10! But that is much better than wondering who is 1, 2, 3 and 4...and leaving it up to a computer to pick.

As someone stated before the goal of the tournament is to determine a champion. Ya its cool to see a George Mason get to the final four, but they didn't win. It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Teams 66-128 that would be let in in a larger tournament would have even less of a chance (none at all actually) of winning a national championship. 64 is enough. In fact you could make the argument that 32 would determine the worthy champion.

All in all you have to look at the tournament as accomplishing one goal. finding the best team that season. The BCS is a another story...

Then, there were these words spoken by the great Philosopher, Robert Montgomery Knight. "We need to expand the tourney to 128 teams. That way we are assured of having the top 65 in the tourney!"

Sounds like he stole that line from Yogi Berra.
