I've been away for a while and much has happened. I was able to see everything from the SEC tourney, to the selection to the first round game.
Many have looked for a fitting nick name for this team. To me, only one will ever be fitting. The Hard Luck Cats.
If it could go wrong, it did. I'm not going to dwell on the close of the season. Its simply time to move on. Before moving on I would like to take a second to thank the Srs and any other players that may move on for the effort and heart this year.
Looking forward: UK has a ways to go before it can return to elite status. The great news is, UK has the resources to make up ground faster than anyone. And I am sure UK will.
I watch teams like Memphis. Those kids have no clue how to play as a team, but can win most games on pure talent. I NEVER want UK to look anything like a team Calipari puts together. I thank God every day that UK had enough sense not look in his direction.
I watch teams in the tourney like UNC and UL. Now that is much more like it. Talent in the right places and a scheme designed to maximize on that talent. I HATE giving props to Williams and Pitino, but I have to give credit where credit is due.
So how does UK get there? This is all strictly my opinion of course, but UK still has a DIRE need for a skilled center, a TRUE PG and one more scorer. This is on top of the recruits already slated for UK. I was really impressed with the player development during the year. Current guys like Harris, Stevenson, and Jasper need to continue to become more skilled and raise their BB IQ a great deal. Passing was this year's biggest hole. They have a long ways to go before becoming a decent passing team. Much of that can be pinned on Crawford and Bradley but certainly not all of it. I sure hope UK has a much more diversified attack next year. And I do think the staff needs to become more creative on the offensive end. The D? More of the same, please. I really liked how these guys developed on the D end this year. I figured this team would have rebounding problems and was actually pleasantly surprised. While they had many games where they had trouble holding their own on the boards, they had many games where they did a great job.
All in all, this team is on the right track. Now we have to wait and see how the roster evolves!
