Being A Hoops Hostage

Birmingham, Ala. – If this is Easter Sunday, it means this is also day six of Oklahoma State coach Sean Sutton and Cowboys basketball fans being held hostage by athletic director Mike Holder.
Oklahoma hoops supporters would say: "Shoot, six days is nothing. Jeff Capel's held us in suspense about his future for weeks."
And so it goes this March Madness time of the year, a period when the future of coaches often draws as much attention as the NCAA Tournament games.
Holder steadfastly refused for weeks to comment on Sutton's future, promising that he would have something to say after OSU's season ended.
That happened last Tuesday, when OSU lost at Southern Illinois in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
And yet Holder remains mute. He's reportedly steamed over the criticism he's received for his messy, unprofessional handling of the situation. So, while the AD does his slow, silent burn, Sutton and the Cowboy Nation fiddles.
Speculation in the coaching circles is that OSU is keeping Sutton in limbo while it sees if it can lure Billy Gillispie away from Kentucky, and is using Gillispie's close friend, Kansas coach Bill Self, as the intermediary.
If OSU can't get Self to return to his alma mater, then it will go after one of his best friends. And the negotiations are made easier, because Self and Gillispie use the same Tulsa-based lawyer, Stuart Campbell.
Kentucky writers, who are here covering Louisville in the East Regional, have heard the OSU rumors but believe Gillispie won't leave Kentucky. But they acknowledge that he still hasn't signed a contract, and he doesn't have the best of relationships with Kentucky's administration.
Capel's name has been linked with the South Carolina job ever since Gamecocks' coach Dave Odom announced in January that he would retire at season's end.
Capel could have put an end to the speculation by simply saying he had no interest in South Carolina and would be back at OU for a third season. But he's been evasive whenever the subject's brought up, continuing that stance since he arrived in Birmingham.
Capel's approach has only added fuel to reports that his agent, Dennis Coleman, is working behind the scenes with South Carolina officials.
OU's season could end today with a loss to Louisville. But, as we've learned with OSU, a team's final game doesn't necessarily mean we'll finally get a final word on the future of its coach.
