I know Anthony was a freshman when he carried Syracuse to an NCAA championship but could a sophomore Patterson do the same thing next year for UK? I think PP can average more than Carmelo's 22 pts and 10 rbs and be an All American.

Who could NOT like the thought, Sir Burton! Too, I so hope it happens. Who knows!

Having said that, it would be nice if Patrick were not to leave after such. Then again, if he were to do all of the above, he would be a lottery pick and almost be forced to leave UK for the NBA. For all of the above, I think we would all be most happy. :)

I wouldn't really call that Carmello like since there have been way more big SO seasons than FR seasons like Carmello's but I see your point. I do think Patterson will have a big year if he stays healthy but as of today I do not think we are a championship contender. If we can sign a scorer or two I think we can be though. Sign Hopson and Harrellson and now you are talking. Regardless I think he will average 18-20 points and 10+ rebounds a game.

Yeah it can definately happen... especially if we get a good scorer from the perimeter so that we can free up space for Patty P.

If we add some more scoring threats and a decent post player he could. If not, he will get too much attention. In fact, minus some decent scoring help next season things could be worse for Patterson??? Hopefully our current recruits will pan out well and it will be a non issue.

Patterson is a great talent but there are a couple areas of his game he really needs to work on. He has difficulty going left in the low post. Most teams figured that out and played him for the strong move to his right. He really needs to work on a spin back inside or a little half hook with his left hand. Another area that could be improved is to learn to use a ball fake. He's used to playing against smaller players and overpowering them, it doesn't always work on this level and definitely won't work at then next.

This is no knock on him, he's the best freshman I've seen in a long time but he's not a complete player yet. If he develops some of those weaknesses he'll be a lottery pick.

It would also be nice for him to develop that mid and deep range jumper........

One of the things mello did was make his team mates better. UK had no one this year that made their team mates better consistently, 2 Pat included. Stevenson's game actually rose after 2 Pat went out. That is a major sign of force feeding.

2 Pat would need either a lot of work or a lot more help for UK to achieve that kind of success next year.

I love 2 Pat. But he doesn't have the handle, passing, size or the outside shot to carry a team to that type success.

I don't know if I agree.

While I agree that Carmelo is one of those one-in-a-million type players, I think with a little work Patterson could be in the same league. What he lacks in size (and a few skill sets), he makes up for with a tremendous intensity and drive. That goes a long way for a big man.

Clearly he's going to have to polish some of the skills that Realist mentions above, especially his ability to go left. But I think he's a guy who could be the leader of a really good basketball team.

We are not that far apart.. LOL
He needs work in the areas I listed if he wants to be a Mello type player. No reason he could not achieve it. I didn't say it couldn't be done.. ;)

He needs to be able to step out and take someone to the rack or shoot over them. He just doesn't have the size to man handle a double team. I agree with you on his move to the left, but many times he can't get the position needed in the first place. I do not see that changing much, unless he has a skilled big on the other block. That's why I think it would be wise to "diversify". I think he should use Carl Malone as a model. He could face up at 12-15 or take it to the rack on roles.

Not sure if I like this analogy. Melo was a big freshman forward with great outside shooting ability, mediocre intensity and defensive defeciencies that were masked in a zone. Patrick is a big sophomore forward (playing center) with mediocre outside shooting ability, amazing intensity and a great defensive instincts. Other than Melo won a title as FR and I hope UK wins a title with Patterson as a sophomore, I see no parrallels.

I don't think people are comparing the "skills". I think its more like comparing the value and end result.

I don't see 2 Pat as a mello type player either. I do think he needs to extend his skills, but not as far out as Mello. Being able to shoot over or go around someone from 12-15 out would do the trick. He already has a decent 15 footer when left open. Develop that while closely guarded and his stock will soar.

We actually dont know if he can or cant shoot the shot a little farther outside or go by people. He didnt need to last year because he could manhandle everyone on the inside. Id love to see him get a decent 3-ball though :):):)
