Just sitting here watching a little of the Syracuse/UMASS game. I didn't realize Syracuse has missed the tournament the last 2 years. I know Syracuse doesn't have the tradition that UK does but Boeheim is a hall of fame coach so what's going on?

If UK missed the tourney 2 years in a row there would be a national out cry for the coach. Is Boeheim just considered untouchable?

Boeheim is already in the Naismith Hall of Fame. He's way up on a list that includes Lute Olson and Coach K for active coaches who consistently and powerfully underachieve.

Keep in mind that 3 years ago, the only reason they made the tournament was a miracle run to an automatic bid that included two crazy buzzer beaters by McNamara.

Exactly!

Gary Williams at Maryland is in the same boat. He's missed the tourney three of the last four years now. I think to a degree, these coaches that have waited so long to win a title, that after they finally win one, they set back and enjoy it a little. Maybe they don't recruit as hard or maybe even coach as hard as they did before they won. I don't know, it's just a theory of mine and I believe it applies to some coaches.

Williams hasn't been enjoying the success he did seven years ago or so, but I put him in a different boat than Boeheim. Williams was never a huge recruiter, in fact his national championship team was famous for being one of the very few ever to not have a burger boy on it.

UMASS was down by 20+ earlier, and now with 4 minutes left they are down by 5 and gaining

What a comeback on the road by UMass, had hints of the 31pt comeback against LSU - of course, Travis Ford was there!!

new yorkers, what do you expect?

syracuse sucks. 22 point lead in the 2nd half and they blow it against a vastly less talented team.

I give Travis one more season at UMass, maybe even this year and he's off to greener pastures.

Don't forget the congrats to Rod Rhodes as well. He was all fired up on the bench towards the end of the game.

As for Syracuse, yes they have underachieved the last few years, but they did have two major injuries this year, one to Eric Devendorf. They still have some very talented players, but very young as well. If they don't make the tourney next year, then something is very wrong. Although Donte Green may leave early this year after his Freshman season.

I've heard recently that Boeheim and Gary WIlliams are seriously thinking of retirement.

Anybody hear the same thing?

i think the rumor is that gary williams is out. i hate the acc and pretty much everyone involved with it, but for some reason, i like this guy. pretty good coach, in my opinion.

don't know anything about boeheim(?), but i would suspect he's there for a while longer.

I was actually talking today to a Syracuse fan about Boeheim.

He says that the feeling up there is that Boeheim will get to 800 wins next season or the one after and retire. Thinks he's pretty much untouchable. Guy told me that even though he doesn't like Boeheim, he thinks their season was a byproduct of injuries. I didn't realize it, but apparently they had a ton of injuries and had very little experience on their roster. This, again, was coming from a guy who doesn't like Boeheim at all.

I watched a handful of Syracuse games this year in which the 'Cuse let by double digits deep into the game. They seem to roll over in the last 10 minutes of every game...

Like Bobby Knight, I have no love for Jim Boeheim and he is no friend of the UK program. I mistakingly gave credit to Jim Calhoun for a comment actually made by Boeheim. He said UK will NOT win as many games in the next 10 years as they did in the previous 10.

I enjoyed the previous 10 but that was a comment that makes me smile after a Syracuse loss. :icon_mrgreen:

I've not heard anything about Williams. Boeheim,I think, already has his successor picked out. I forget his name but he may retire in the next couple of seasons. I had forgot about Devindorf's injury. I'm sure that hurt them quite a bit this season.

Devendorf was pretty much their new McNamara and he tore up his knee(?) the first week of the season. They also had a few more important players go down throughout the season.

I think Boeheim is just not hungry for it anymore. He got his championship and now there's really nothing left for him except for, of course, win 800, which he can limp to because no one wants to fire a guy who's won nearly 800 games.

This sounds eeirly similar to Bobby Bowden at FSU.

But of course...us UF football fans want him to stay as long as possible! :icon_lol::icon_biggrin::icon_mrgreen:

Interesting. I wasn't aware that Knight didn't like Boeheim. What has he said? I'm just interested in Knight's take on Boeheim. I don't like Boeheim either. He's stepped over the line too often in commenting and making sweeping declarations about other coaches and their programs and usually in a negative way.

I phrased it incorrectly but I'm not a big Knight or Boeheim fan. Sure they can coach, while being as bullying and smug as any coach in college bb.
