Voices from Afghanistan...voices from Tibet. I caught just seconds of an NPR interview today related to a voice from Tibet. The Tibetan interviewee said something to the effect that people all over the world have rights and freedom, and it's a difficult thing to fathom that I'll live my life without those things. Profound, I think. That voice would come from any of us in a similar situation.

I agree with you.
That's why I support our endeavors in Afghanistan and that other place. Even if we fail to produce our desired outcome of a democracy, we will at least (hopefully) be introducing the element and the hope of democracy...the desire for democracy...planting the seed in the region.
Others fought and many died to aid us in our fateful 1776 experiment. Lafayette being the most famous.
The majority of Americans oft times sit idly by comfortable in their liberty and freedom as the much of the world lives out their lives under the harsh conditions of despotism, totalitarianism and sheer terror. We, Americans, rarely give thought to the idea that without the assistance of France, we would not have thrown off the colonial yoke. Perhaps, the world would be entirely different now.
The fight for liberty is constant and is exactly that...A Fight. It is an eternal struggle.
To paraphrase the Kennedy bros of the 60s. To whom much is given, much is expected.
This is the not a political board. So I won't go further.
