Well, I just learned that you can't. Had a rental car for 3 days & went to fill up yesterday before returning the car & found out you have to an attendant do it. I'd thought all states had ended that practice till now. How nuts is that?

We may be backwards in KY, but this is medieval. What a career opportunity in NJ: gas pumper.

And they probably charge extra for the gas to pay the attendant.

According to what I've read, that's also true in Oregon.

Actually, the price was low (by today's standards): $2.99.

If that is the case, another person gets a job without paying more for gas. Nothing wrong with that.

That's just what I was thinking.

I remember that as a little kid since my grandparents lived on the border of NY/NJ that i couldn't get the gas for them. I'm kind of surprised its still that way.

Just curious . . . do they also do the things you used to get with full service back in the day, like checking the oil and tires?

Not in NJ at the joint I went. Completely impersonal.

That's disappointing.

Last September I stopped in a small town called Clarksdale, Arizona, far from the interstate. There was one small gas station there and it was straight out of the 1970s - old pumps with dials, hoses laid out to ring a bell when a car drove over them, the old plastic tray for holding your credit card while you sign it, etc. It was full serve only, though not any pricier than other stations I had seen. The guy checked the tires, and offered to check the oil. It was pleasant.

It seemed like a time warp, especially as the radio in the garage (yes, like in the old days, they had two bays with lifts in which mechanics worked on cars) was playing The Doors' Light My Fire.

Lol. A tiny town down the road a couple of miles is like that, too. It's okay if you HAVE to have gas, but they do add more to the price for attendants, oil check, wash your windows, etc.

Did you get a free stabbing to go with it?

Sorry, I'm not high on most jersey folk.

Live near NJ and travel across it on every trip back to KY. Not all gas stations have full service. I think as you get closer to NYC, you see more of them so I wonder if it is a law by county, not state. It may not even be a law. Here in CT we have a few gas stations that have strictly full service and they are usually in the center of wealthy communities like Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan.

This one is outside Philly. Get to do it again tomorrow.
