View Full Version : Wisdom from Doris Burke

Watching the LadyVols v. LSU game, color commentator Doris Burke said something very prescient and with application to the Cats (current and recent past).
She said something similar to this:
"LSU has made the Final Four now for the last four years. They've got enough defense to get them here, but they never seem to have enough offense to win it."
And, sure enough, holding the LadyVols to an incredible 49 points wasn't good enough to win.
That's why I'm really concerned about next year. Who and how are we gonna score? Especially with exactly one player on the team that can knock down the new three-pointer ...
Angst! Trepidation! Woe!

I think if you're looking for a National Championship next year you're going to end up disapointed.

I didn't get that impression from I Melvin's post at all. I share his concern.

I agree, only one team wins the National Title each year, are they the only one that should care about scoring?
I don't think anyone thinks we are a contender for the national title next year, so should we not recruit or care about scoring? Kind of a silly, nonsense post if you ask me.

Melvin I agree it's a major concern for me too...this is why losing Hopson was MAJOR, if we can get Flemmings it will ease that loss...

Most guys on our squad can put the ball in the basket. You don't have to be a great 3pt shooting team in order to do that. I think we will have 4-5 very capable scorers next year in Meeks, Patterson, Stevenson, Miller, and Jasper. If we can get any of the bigs we are looking at along with Galloway and Liggins and we will be just fine. However our strength next year will be on the defensive end. I just don't get the negative reactions from some fans about our scoring ability next year. Trust me we will be fine. I believe we will be firmly entrenched in the rankings all year. Hey you gotta be positive:icon_idea:

You are awfully confident...I am not so sure
Meeks-not sure how he will respond after his injury/surgery and basically a year out of playing basketball
Patterson-a given
Stevenson- again, a question mark, hopefully he continues to improve
Miller-no one knows how he will play on the college level but nobody thinks of him as a big time high school scorer so I don't anticipate him being one in college, at least not his first year
Jasper-more question marks, if we are counting on him to be a major contributer scoring we will be in big trouble next year

Gonna have to find a third scorer.
Gonna have to have guys like Jasper and Harris improve offensively. Big time.
Those things happen, we'll be alright.
If not, we're gonna have to play fierce defense night after night to compete for an SEC title.

We will be right on average for a BCG coached team. There have been years in the past where going into the season it appeared that we would be hurting in the scoring dept. The points that Crawford and Bradley scored will be picked up somewhere. Probably because we will be more efficient at getting the ball inside. The guys Coach is picking up are consistent all around players not one dimensional as were some of our players in the past. IMO, in a few years I think we will see our teams have 4-5 low to mid double figure scorers instead of 2 high double figure scorers.

Bringing back a point that has been made so many times. A team can score 70 ppg, lose 50 of those, and still score around 70 the next year. We might not need third scorer because our depth will allow a ton of points. We could, and probably will, go at least 10 deep next year. Patterson and Meeks average in the 45 range between the 2, and the other 8 will average at least 30-35. Thats not even 5 a game for our 8 role players. We will be fine. LSUs girls team has been one player these last few years. Slyvia Fowles. We have 2. Not saying were champions this year but we will be a top 25 team most of the season

Okay, let's do some cyphering as Jethro would say.
Crawford averaged 18 points and Bradley averaged 14, so that's 32 points to replace if my math's up to snuff.
Patterson averaged 16 points. I'm willing to give him a 20 point average next season. That's 4 points.
Meeks averaged 8 points, but essentially 0 the last third of the season. I'm saying that Jodie can average 15 points. That's 7 more points.
Stevenson averaged 6 points. I'm giving him a 12 point average next season (maybe generous, maybe not). That's 6 more points.
Jasper averaged 4 points. I'm giving him an 8 point average next season. That's 4 more points.
Harris averaged 4 points. I'm giving him an 8 point average next season, so there 4 more points.
Stewart averaged 2 points. I'm saying he averages 6 points next season. There's 4 more points.
That's 29 of those 32 points, and that's not looking what the incoming players might do.
All those shots that Ramel and Joe took will still be taken by somebody, so replacing those points won't be quite as troublesome as some seem to think.

We could, and probably will, go at least 10 deep next year.
Depending on what you mean by 10 deep, but BCG has commented that he typically plays a 7-8 man rotation. That said, I agree depending on potential recruits we could have better players going 10 deep. I am just not sure we will use them for more than mop up time or a quick breather here or there.

Can that Larry cypher, or what?
What I'm most worried about is replacing Joe's ability to attack the basket. I always knew he had good moves around the hoop, but I had no idea he could do it so consistently and creatively - he never seemed to make the same move twice in a game.
We can probably count on Jodie's jumper (did he have surgery today, btw?), Perry's 12-footer and Patrick's hooks and slams but who will attack the basket?
